Should you bother with Facebook and Twitter for business?

Over the past year I've been playing around with Twitter and Facebook not just on a social level but also on a business level.

I wanted to understand if these social networking sites can really help to increase traffic and conversions for my sites.

What I did was that I put a couple of buttons on my sites:

"Be my friend on Facebook" and "Follow me on Twitter".

As of today I have 466 friends on Facebook and 346 followers on Twitter.

Neither are huge numbers and considering I get around 10,000 people on my sites evey day the figures look even worse.

Anyway, what did I discover?

The Facebook crowd are MUCH more interested in me and my business than those on Twitter.  Those on Twitter seem more interested in what they can get from me and not so interested in my business at all, espeically when it comes to buying my products.

I think the reason for this may be that Facebook has a huge range of ways in which to interact with your friends and so they see you more as a virtual friend than someone they just follow now and then.

As a result I have recently stopped posting so much on Twitter and have instead invested more time in Facebook.  From a personal point of view I also prefer Facebook as I can get to know my users and customers better through it, and especially see who they are and what they are up to.

Have you had any success with either of these site?

Hello Justin,

I have been using twitter, facebook, linkedin, trulia, google analytics, and of course, ActiveRain.  We have just started to have some response in business.  I have only been blogging for a month and a half and I am always trying to find new information that will help me learn to maximize the utilities at hand through all of the different networking avenues.  I have most of our different networks linked and have started to acquire some followers now.  Thanks for the information.  Hope you have a great day.

Feel the same, Justin.  The twitter limit of 140 character tweets doesn't give much room for anything of lasting value.  An exception would be Obama's tweet the last night of the Democratic Convention in Chicago "I'm going to Grant Park to accept the nomination for Presidency of the USA".  My tweets don't carry much weight "I'm off to do another Open House at.....!"
