My Moving Adventures Part 1

By
Services for Real Estate Pros

In our profession we usually only see the buying and selling side (or renting) of the home or condo. When is the last time you actually "moved"?

Well Steve and I found our little dream home recently. It's a rental, not far from where we live now, with a garage for our 82 Shovel head. Something we've been in search of for awhile.

When I moved to Florida, I went from 2000 LV SQ FT to 880 then to 900. Needless to say, I have a lot of things in boxes I've not seen in 4 years! Our new home is a 3BR. 1.5 BA and about 1100 LV SQ FT. It's going to be like Christmas for me. I'm even going to be able to put a Christmas Tree up this year!

When Steve moved in he put a lot of his belongings in storage, he will go into the storage to get what he needs on occasion, so he is so stoked about being able to have all his belongings with him.

We decided to take possession of the keys on Friday the 13th and keep our current rental til the end of July. This way we would be able to take our time moving in the July heat. We didn't take into account the July Storms!

I began packing my stuff this past week, making a pile of boxes in the corner of our narrow living area.

When I pack boxes, I pack them so that I can lift them.

I was packing a box in the kitchen and bent over to make sure it wasn't too heavy. I had a box of unopened Kitty Litter sitting in front of it, my foot slipped as I bent over..

No four letter words came out, but Steve knew I was in pain, I knew what I did, been there done that and I did it again! I dislocated my baby toe. OWE!

I stepped away and fixed it on my own and the sick feeling in my stomach went away. Whew.... Ok, I was done for the night.

Steve and I have two households of belongings incorporated into one. I have just a few items left from when I was married that I'm slowly weeding out. (The couch went out the door in May). My Broker/Manager just happened to have a beautiful couch that she was giving away and we picked that up yesterday morning. With baby toe taped to it's partner and full shoes on Steve and I got the couch and packed boxes into the house. No sooner then we were done the skies opened up.

I said yes to the couch, sight unseen. We love it!

Next we need a nice old coffee table to go with it. Something rustic, as we like antique, or rustic type tables.

Once back at our soon to be former home I started to empty the storage room I've had filled since I moved in 4 years ago and put the boxes in my trunk. As I was carrying boxes from the back of the house to the car I have to step up on a patio and back down, and I'm wearing my sandals. Yep, jammed my big toe on a step. (4 letter word? Oh yeah, it came out) Once the car was loaded, I took a nice long bath and took the polish off my nails and now my big toe nail has a pretty blue hue to it.

I have to laugh you guys. One of my moves, someone left a hand truck laying down, with the lip sticking up, I was carrying a box and didn't see it and walked smack into it. That time a no four letter word escaped me, it was one of those 4 word exclamations. A couple minutes later I realized I was bleeding. That required 7 stitches in my shin. Let's hope I'm done running into things, I have 2 more weekends of this!

Today we are going to empty Steve's storage room, he is so excited about this, and I am excited for him. This is something we've both been looking forward to since he moved in.

Oh, the adventures of moving!  I remember it all too well.  When we moved here, I was so excited I had us completely unpacked in just a couple days.  Then I had no idea what to do with myself, so much of my life had been based on getting us there, what did I do once I got there?  ;o)

Lysa, congrats on the new bigger home.  Moving can be traumatic.  Quit adding to that with injuries!! (Sorry you hurt yourself).  BE CAREFUL and keep us posted!

Lysa, you and Steve have two weeks left of this, hum, well I will pray hard that you do not catch up with me and the amount of stitches I have.  (over 20) LOL.  It is always exciting to see what you have packed, Cyndi and I still have boxes upstairs in the overhead garage attic, and we feel if we do not use something in a years time, out it goes.  Well that part is still slow going.

I am excited about your new home, and it will be nice to have all your stuff in one place again.  Congratulations and try and be careful.  LOL

Lysa,

Congrats on your move and I have moved a few times over the last 10 yrs.I found my last move was not as stressful as we got rid of most of the trash from the original move from NY..that one was bad..the last one in 2005 was much easier and closer to the last home. Now as far as stubbing my little toe...hate that and maybe you had too much Jacks?:)

I loved to hear about your moving adventures! (not the the getting hurt part though) That's interesting to see into other people's lives when they share. We moved into our townhouse a little over two years ago. We moved from 400 sq. ft. to 500. We managed (with Randy's help) to stick it all in a UHaul and unload in one trip. How's that?

Sarah, I may have to paint before unpacking. A bit disappointed in the fact that this place wasn't cleaned AT ALL. So I may have to deal with the clutter longer then expected :(.

Peggy, Moving is a breeze for me, Been doing it all my life! Wish I could do it just once injury free! NO ER visits yet though, that's a huge plus!

Bob, LOL I hear ya there! So far today, No bo-bos!

Lysa: I so hate moving I've only done it twice! I also hate dislocated toes and when it has occurred, I'd hate to reveal what I said, so I won't. ;-)

Hi Lysa,
Here's hoping you have continued to avoid any major injuries!  A few years ago my aunt was packing up to move and dropped a packed box on her foot & broke her foot.  My Mom (the good sister) stepped in and did all the unpacking, etc.  My Aunt said it was the best and easiest move she ever made.  LOL.

Jay. I can't imagine only moving twice! Wow! I've lived in so many states due to my military upbringing that this is normal to me.

As for the toe? I've broken and dislocated it before... You'd think I would know better!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Cynthia, I'm keeping my riding boots on durning the loading and unloading process. I've broken a the same toe before, and a bone in the other foot, I don't want to go there again! That was so nice of you mom to help out.

Joan, LOL! Next week is the big stuff, I'm going to call in some favors for sure!

Lysa, I HATE (with all capital letters) moving! Just be-careful!  (Unless your trying to get out of the moving stuff!)  About a week ago, I was putting the ladder away, and the little shelf that says "not a step" came down and hit me square across the bridge of my nose.  Now that was cause for many loud four letter words!  I got a cut across my nose and some bruising under my eyes!  UGH!  CONGRATS on the new place!
