The US Labor Department has reported the top cities ending in 2009 with the lowest unemployment rates of cities with over 1 million population in the Metro area. The top six cities are:

  1. Oklahoma City         6%
  2. Washington DC        6.2%
  3. New Orleans             6.8%
  4. San Antonio             6.8%
  5. Austin                     6.9%
  6. Virginia Beach          6.9%

The cities with the highest rates were Detroit at 16.9% and Riverside, CA at 16.0%. There were 17 additional cities with unemployment rates of 10.0% or greater.

I would think this is good news for Oklahoma City real estate as we head into the new year.

6% is still too much, but some cities would have a day long celebration for this number.
