The Buying Experience: Love and Fear

The following is a post written by Markus Boyd, Nissan Selection Specialist at Hunt Club Nissan.  He has some wise words that could easily apply to house shopping...

It has been said that every action we take can be stripped down to one of two basic dominating motivators; LOVE or FEAR.  Wow, pretty profound stuff!  Are we really that simple?  Maybe it’s so simple it becomes complicated.  With this knowledge I have tried to strip some of my past actions down to the core and I have no choice but to admit that fear has been a dominating force in my decision making.  This exercise has opened my eyes and has allowed me to be more self-aware of what drives me to act.

When I reflect on my past car buying experiences I can see that fear definitely played a part on how I handled the process.  I feared buying a lemon, paying too much or getting ripped off (whatever that means) and I feared that the sales person was an alien that wanted my personal information for the sake of being able to easily locate me for future abductions….and the list goes on.   Are you identifying with me?

Would these experiences have looked any different had LOVE been the dominating motivator behind my thinking and my actions?  Would I have realized that the sales person was a human with a family…and dogs…and had been through the same process of buying a car?  Would I have been grateful for the discount that I was offered rather than walking away from what truly was a good price….just because I feared I was being ripped off?  Would I have bought a car that had more features and gadgets instead of thinking that the sales person was trying to upgrade me to get a higher commission?  .  Fear takes away our ability to think rationally and rather than protecting us FEAR based actions cause more harm than good.

Today I am on the other side of the sales process.  As a Selection Specialist at a Nissan Dealership I can see that I am not alone with how I handled my car buying experiences.  Everyday, it is clear that most people are in a state of fear as they try to navigate through the car buying process.   Like any business, there are good dealerships and bad dealerships, good sales people and bad sales people, the right car and the wrong car.   Guess what?  If we let love guide us we need not fear the bad…and we will know when to walk away.  When we let fear guide us…everything looks and feels the same.

Before you embark on your next big purchase whether it is a car, a house, a boat or a TV, commit within your own mind that you will let LOVE guide you through the process.  What will that look like for you personally?  It is not for me to say.   I can promise you however, that in this life we live of ‘choosing our own adventures’ the story ends better when we chose love over fear.

I am a big believer in the Love vs. Fear philosophy.  These are the two primal emotions that guide us through life and the daily decisions that we make.  Thanks for this post.
