Westlake Student Council-Drew Brees T-Shirt Sale

My name is Russell and I am a football fan. There, I admitted it but considering where I was born and raised I never really had a chance.I grew up in West Texas, the epicenter of a state that already considers the sport just shy of a religion. You’ve seen “Friday Night Lights”, well that’s my part of the state. High School Football rules with the NFL and college ball running 2nd and a distant 3rd. As a child I remember watching the Dallas Cowboys with my Dad, early days with Don Meredith and Roger Staubach leading the team to various heights of success and on through Aikman and the current multiple year run of the the soap opera known as “Jerry’s World”! To be a fan of the dysfunctional Cowboys over the years is a weird, heavy load to bear. My fellow fan Jason Crouch and I have spent hours commiserating over the folly of our team! Not to be confused with the obvious impairment of say, Eagle’s fans but troubling none the less. Each week watching some of the best talent assembled on the field either play masterfully or lose miserably instills a horrible insecurity in a fan, constantly worried about each play wondering when they will explode or implode. I guess this is what they mean by co-dependent behavior.

And to think I mistakenly believed I had managed to break myself of the football habit for a number of years. Until that fateful day when the Westridge Middle School Track Coach and Football Coach called us up and asked if we would consider allowing our son to play football...His mom and I reluctantly agreed and that was it, off the wagon and this time, with my wife as a willing partner enabling both of us, the addiction returned full bore. As we became fans of Westlake Football my wife bought a couple of books on the subject, attended a coaches camp and really got hooked. I knew we were in over our heads when I returned from an Open House to find her sitting on the couch excitedly cheering on the Cowboys on TV. She looked up at me and said, “Hey baby, let’s get tickets to see the Cowboys in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day”! I was was shocked and could not have been more surprised if she had said, “Hey baby, would you please install a stripper pole in our bedroom?” Although we have been Cowboys fans our son, ever the contrarian (my wife says he gets it from me) has been a fan of former Westlake High School Football quarterback, Drew Brees. As quarterback at our school he won every game the year we won state and he continued to follow Brees while at San Diego and now with the New Orleans Saints. For a better idea about the his remarkable personality and career check out this recent Drew Brees Profile in the New York Times.

I believe that all football fans struggle with whom to support at the SuperBowl. After all only two teams make it, if we are lucky it’s not a couple we abhor (Did I mention the Eagles or those arrogant Patriots)? In the past I have at various times cheered for Paul Slaybaugh’s, Arizona Cardinals and *GASP* even June Lewis's, Pittsburgh Steelers. Yeah, I know, fellow Cowboys fans will be giving me a ration of S%*&;;$  for that confession). This year it’s different, this year, Drew Brees will be leading the New Orleans Saints to their first ever Superbowl. Drew Brees is a 1997 graduate of Westlake High School and as they say, Once Chap (short for Chaparral) always a Chap! But really it’s more than that, Drew Brees is a remarkable person in his own right both on and off the field. A truly decent person, he gives back to his community through the Brees Dream Foundation and the nation as well. Check out this NFL Play 60 ad as he joins other NFL personalities to support kids fitness:

I rhink the video has been disabled but click on the link above for an especially inspiring video!

Pretty cool and this year, Westlake High School is selling T-Shirts to support the Brees Dream Foundation  that does so much good in an unselfish manner.  If you want one they are going fast at $10 each through Saturday. So this weekend along with a huge contingent of Westlake football fans, my family (especially our son who has been loyal for years) and who knows who else, I will be joining (at least in spirit) my friend Lisa Heindel, New Orleans Resident and Realtor and enjoying a great time rooting for a team that I actually support... at least until next year ;-)

Now I really feel guilty for not knowing who was playing!  I never know, unless of course it's the EAGLES, and that's only because the testosterone level in my house goes through the roof then!   Great post!

Wow I just had to stop by...I am so happy for the Saints, New Orleans, the whole  state and of course Drew Brees.  That touching photo of Drew  with his new little son was the most precious picture of a victory win that has ever been seen.  It had to bring a tear to every eye that saw the win.  Really  if you are a Colts fan a bit of you have to be happy for the Saints.

I could not be more overjoyed than is the Steelers won. and....that is saying something for a die hard Steeler fan

Happy Victory............Saints.........enjoy   what a game

OK. Russell has been bugging me all day about reading his blog and leaving a comment...After the Gulf Coast got pounded by Hurricane Katrina 4.5 years ago I watched the pictures on the news and felt heartache that New Orleans was practically destroyed. I have fond college memories of Mardi Gras spent in New Orleans. I still run into displaced New Orleans folks when they are seeking health care here in Austin.

Now the Saints get a shot at the biggest show on earth with a Westlake kid at the helm and they WON. Amazing! How great is that. I am a lover and cheerleader for the underdog. It is also an inspiring story of hope, recovery, and the strength of the human spirit. I'll have to get a family trip planned to New Orleans.

BTW... Thanks Russell for letting the whole world know about the pole in our bedroom!

Love ya honeybunch!

Russell - I am happy for you and "your" Saints.  :)  I didn't watch any of it, as I mentioned before.  Have a terrific week, my friend.

Pole in your bedroom?  Did I miss something?!!  LOL

Saints played a GREAT game--was a bit worried about them that first quarter though but, they pulled it together!  And, 32 of 39?  That HAS to be a Super Bowl record!  I know he tied for the most passing yards but, I'm curious about the pass completions.  Regardless, he AND the team were amazing tonight!

The BEST part of the evening--other than Porter's interception--was AFTER the game when they did a close-up on Drew with tears in his eyes, holding his adorable baby boy and kissing him on the cheek as he looked around in amazement at the stadium!  How precious was THAT?!  Or should I say, DAT?!

Have a great week and I can't wait to hear from you about Dallas!  I am SUPER psyched about meeting all of my Texas buddies!  I tried to talk hubby into going but, he said he wanted to stay in his man-cave and work while I play!

Sajy Well we surely did get to see a GREAT Game!

Bruce Thanks for commenting during the game it was fun to post in real time during the game!

Clark This was a game that was not decided until the end for sure. Thanks fro stopping by!

Joseph The Colts played very well but I think the Saints just wanted it more!

Andrew Thanks so much for stopping by and Brees along with the rest of the team did play with a lot of heart!

Renee WOW you are so right, I hear you and it was a sight to behold!

Susan You are so funny so now will you forget that I said you wre having a blonde moment? As far as living in a house filled with Eagles fans...well, I will have to pray for the whole family ;-)

HI MARGARET Thanks for making one of your rare appearances here on my blog! I know we both care deeply for those who ae not as fortunate as ourselves and that compassion extends to many both locally and in the world. It was fun watching the game today and even more so with Drew Brees being a Westlake student. As far as that pole, you always manage to crack me up. Now 1/3 of the people who read this are probably shocked (yeah...I like that) 1/3 don’t know WHAT to believe and a 1/3 are probably a bit envious! I love you too and we really are having a great life together!

Jason Me and my Saints? too funny but it was a lot of fun and next year maybe our Cowboys!

Debe I agree with everything you said, especially when Brees was tearfully holding his baby boy during the celebration at the end of the game! Probably the best Superbowl I have ever witnessed and it turns out the #1 show of all time with over 104 MILLION viewers. I do hope this helps New Orleans as a turning point when they really need it!

And yes I am very excited to be able to at last meet you and a lot of other Rain Members in Dallas because I JUST SIGNED UP! See you next week!

What a game it was...and how cool was it to see Drew holding his son at the end of the game with tears in his eyes as he enjoyed the fruits of his labor.  I know...it's a girl thing to like seeing a guy cry...but it was cool.

I'm glad your team won!  I was too busy attending my dad's birthday party and cooking burgers to pay much attention.  But I did catch a few minutes of the half time show.

I'm a Steeler by marriage, LOL even though I am a Jacksonville native (sorry Jags). I thought for sure that Manning would win it but I was secretly rooting for the underdogs.

TLW Margaret say’s hi! She does not do social media and this was indeed a rare appearance. She likes to say, she is Linked Out ;-O And she is used to teasing in every forum and is just happy that I have friends who put up with me. And yes, I am the lucky one, now about that pole...

Claire We also thought that was very moving and also another look into a man who really is a good guy all around! And yes it’s cool to cry now and then ;-)

Georgina Well Happy Birthday to your Dad! And for some reason I figured you might also be a fan of the Who (it makes sense dosen’t it!)

Kim I know about Steeler fans and have several friends who are also fans (including June Lewis) so I can understand...Funny that you mentioned it but a lot of folks like to root for the underdog and this time they came out on TOP!

Lisa We are so happy for the Saints along with you an your fabled city! I hope this is the true turning point for y’all and that the future continues to get better. You DO belong and WHO DAT?

Hey there Russell, You know you have a way of writing like your readers are on raft gently bouncing on the calm waters and then BAM you flip over our raft with a line like “Hey baby, would you please install a stripper pole in our bedroom?”. Thanks buddy, my desk and keyboard have my afternoon cuppa tea all over the place now

I was going to comment on this earlier but I had nothing to contribute since I don't watch football. Yes I do sit down w/ my Ted and pick out who I want to root for before the game but here is my criteria;

  • what colors will they be wearing that day
  • what cool graphic is on their helmet
  • what state are they located in
  • who is the coach
  • who is the quarterback
  • who are those players with the long hair
  • does anyone endorse a junk food I like

But hey I've picked more winners this year than the resident fan at my home this year, what can I say? And I did pick the Saints to win while my husband picked the Colts. Can't blame him we lived in MD until 4 years ago and he was born in Baltimore if you remember when they were the Baltimore Colts till the mean, mean man moved them out in the middle of the night.

OOPS! Sorry about the tea but really when my wife asked if we could drop that much money to go to a Cowboys game, it was just as surprising as if she had asked for...well you get it ;-)

Wow! You actually picked more winners? I am completely impressed! And I have to tell you that with all of the whacked ideas, theories and conjecture that I went through this season, you probably ave a better system than anyone I know!

One other thing, I remember those Colts of Baltimore, that was the team upset by Broadway Joe Namath and I am stiil a fan of Peyton Manning, He is going to win more Super Bowls in the future. We just had a lot of fun watching Drew Brees for our High School take the Saints all the way!

Thanks for stopping by Cynthia, I always like our conversations!
