BRAC Update From Huntsville Alabama

BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) is finally making some more progress Huntsville Alabama and the Redstone Arsenal with a potential of 4,500 federal jobs moving to the area.  Just recently SMDC (US Army Space & Missile Defense Command) headquarters officially became a part of Redstone Arsenal when its flag was officially transferred from Arlington Virginia to Redstone Arsenal Alabama.  This move brings approximately 180 SMDC positions to Huntsville.

In addition to SMDC headquarters, the majority of the Missile Defense Agency, which serves all branches of the armed forces, the Army Materiel Command headquarters and the Army Security & Assistance Command headquarters are being moved to Redstone as well.

Other BRAC related moves include:

  • Headquarters, AMC and USASAC (~ 1,700 positions)
  • Headquarters, SMDC (~ 180 positions)
  • Aviation Technical Test Center and Rotary Wing Air Platform (~ 400 positions)
  • MDA (~ 2,248 positions)
  • 2nd Recruiting Brigade (~ 113 positions)

All of BRAC related moves must happen no later than September 15, 2011.

BRAC does take time.  Fort Belvoir and Quantico are supposed to have several thousands of personnel transfer here in a few years.  If this happens, I and my husband are ready to help folks find housing if they can't get it on base.

I too am looing forward to the BRAC movement.  I am near Ft. Bragg in NC and we are expecting around 20,000 familes.
