As a Real Estate professional I am always amazed that I still have to justify my services and why I should be paid for such services. A friend of mine always said "I don't know who made the Real Estate laws, but it sure wasn't a Realtor!" I have to agree with her.
In the process of buying a home, who does all the work? THE REALTOR. Joe Consumer calls me, or send me an email or smoke signal, or whatever way he gets in touch with me. He tells me I am looking for a home in "x," I search high and low, preview, set up a tour of similar properties, find out all I can about "x," and then after all this Joe Consumer enters into a contract, and eventually ends up buying a home. Along ,the way, the mortgage guy may have been paid for the application fee, the home inspector has been paid, the appraiser has been paid, the lawyer has been paid, then it finally comes to closing and the lawyer is asking me to lower my fee, should I ask hime to lower his fee, or perhaps the appraiser or home inspector may rebate some of their fees. Well, the answer is NO.
Why is it that we are held in such low regard when it comes time to be paid? I for one know that I worked the hardest because if it wasn't for me no one would be sitting at that table--sound cocky, maybe, but in all honesty, it usually is the truth. The Realtor is not just some person who shows you a home, your Realtor is a trusted advisor, a confidant, someone who will push you when you need to be pushed, but most of all I am also your friend when the transaction is over. I'm not coming to your home for Thanksgiving, but I will show up at your door each Christmas with a gift basket.
Think about these things the next time you spend a significant amount of time working with a Realtor, only to question why do I need a Realtor?
