High radon levels

I just picked up a radon test last week from a home in Platteville, Co. The results were 26.4 pCi/L. The EPA recommends that you take action at levels over 4 pCi/L. It was a little sad for me because the occupants did not know what radon is and they had the basement set up as a play area for the children. High Radon levels are totally fixable and not as expensive as a lot of other concerns that may get noted on an inspection.(carpet, roof ect..) I am glad they are now aware and can test their next home before moving in. The buyer that ordered the test is happy to know also, so he can easily mitigate and be safer in the new home.

Brian,

I have done some radon testing in your neck of the woods that had results in the 20s. Down here in the Pikes Peak Region those levels are fairly common in some neighborhoods. (I had one a couple of weeks ago that was 21 pCi/L.) I have measured radon concentrations as high as 147 pCi/L further up in the mountains.

Most of Colorado is in Zone 1 of EPA's Radon Map (which means houses here have a high likelihood of measuring above the EPA Action Level of 4.0 pCi/L). It is always a good idea to test your home for radon - and not only at the time of sale.
