What Agents Do: The Source of the Source

By
Real Estate Agent with Manning & Company

The best description of what real estate agents do is that we are the “source of the source.” We advocate our ToolTradebuyer or our seller, you bet – and we do that with information, guidance, counsel, being there, meeting them, meeting the whole family – meeting the Uncle in from Albuquerque who’s coming in on Labor day and wants to be sure their niece or nephew is making a good decision. We are there, on game and walk through the entire process like we have so many times before and know when we first start talking to you we are about to do it again. We use everything we know and what we don’t know we find out and report back and it is all pointed toward a single goal – make sure that our buyer or seller has every resource we can conger up to complete their transaction. And we refer our sources. That’s what we have – sources – and, frankly that is who we are – we’re the source and as it turns out “the source of the source.”

Perhaps the most daunting thiing about being agent is also it’s most appealing. We are only as good as the deal we are doing today for you. The past doesn’t weigh in and what we do next week is way too far off to have a read. We are on game today or we are not. If not, we are fired, if we are on, then we are engage in your deal.

If you look at the definition of agency say from one of the many dictionaries on line and they all basically say an agent is “A person with a state/provincial license to represent a buyer or a seller in a real-estate transaction in exchange for commission. Most agents work for a real-estate broker or realtor.”

Though Investodepia is pretty good with “Real-estate agents are the people you deal with face to face when buying or selling property. These are the people on the front lines of the real-estate market and perform such tasks (amongst others) as showing homes to perspective buyers and negotiating transactions on behalf of their client. Real-estate agents often work on a 100% commission basis, their income dependent upon their ability to find property suitable for their clients and closing transactions.”

Both of these definitions are basically correct or at least not incorrect they are still vague, non descript, academic.

(Being Realtors is actually a separate discussion – another rant, another day.)

If you ask yourself what do we do the answer is, we know stuff including where properties are located, we know people, we know where things get done. We offer you these inside our fiduciary responsibilities (OK, I had to throw in the Realtor part while I was at it). We have sources - we are the sourse of the source.

I refer to a great Realtor to that of a conductor.  Since individually a lot of musicians can't create great music any easier than a great title rep, escrow officer, lender, appraiser, lender, inspector can get together for a successful closing without conflict.
