Can you break into your own listing?

By
Home Stager with Welcome Home Furniture Rental & Staging

Can you break in to your own listing?  You locked every door, checked them twice, locked and closed the front door and put the key back in the lock box.  Is your listing really secure?  Did you remember to check the doggy door?

I’m a stager with Welcome Home Furniture Rental & Staging and recently staged a property in Danville and had to return to finish one final detail.  The listing agent gave me the key to enter the property but the key did not work..  I tried every door and still no luck. It was the wrong key.  In trying all the doors, I discovered a doggy door that led into the laundry room.  I lifted the flap and then the plastic cover, and it came right off!    I thought, should I or shouldn’t I, try to get in through the doggy door…(I did have permission to enter from both the agent and the homeowner.)  So I tried, and it only took about 5 seconds and I was in! It was just too easy.

I’m writing this because it is something we don’t often think about.  There is so much focus on lock boxes and security codes etc. and this is such an easy way to breach security.  As we all strive to do the best we can for our clients, this may be a small thing we overlook but could result in drastic consequences.  Just a word to the wise…

Wow Donna, that's a sobering thought that someone could enter so easily through the doggy dog.  I've had doggy doors in the past that had locking panels on them, but this one must have not been secure.   Thanks for the warning!

Donna, What a great point.  Who would ever think about someone going through the doggy door.

I take it there was no dog guarding his turf, or he was glad to see you.  If the doggy is gone, by all means seal it up.

We actually had someone break into a listing we staged. They were after the 60 inch flat screen tv. They entered through the basement window and got a big surprise- the flat screen was a prop tv! The thief left it in the house and thankfully left the rest of the staging alone. Can you imagine what they were thinking when they realized it was plastic? The police had to take it in for fingerprinting and then rehung it on the wall!

Donna- it's too easy to forget the doggy doors unless you're someone trying to break in!  I'd be proud of myself just knowing I could fit through one!
