Myth: If the mold is black then it is toxic.
Truth: Not necessarily. Often there are several of over 100,000 different species of mold in a colonization. The natural reaction when one mold attacks another is there color turns dark. Myth: Can't I just paint over the mold?
Truth: Mold is moist and the reason that it is growing in the first place. Paint that is applied directly to mold will most likely peel.
Myth: If the ventilation is increased won't the mold go away?
Truth: Mold secretes an enzyme to dissolve it's food source and buries itself into the food when it digests the food. Spores, dead or alive, may remain and may remain allergenic for years.
Myth: If the mold is hidden it won't be a health problem.
Truth: If mold is behind paneling, drywall, carpeting, the top side of ceilings or wall coverings it still remain a potential health hazard. Microscopic spores are released and easily become airborne. Air testing is a useful tool to identify a hidden problem.
Myth: I'll just clean it with bleach, it'll be okay.
Truth: Cleaning up mold can be more complicated than you think. Myth: It takes years for mold to grow.
Truth: Mold can begin to grow within 24-48. Introduction of moisture is the missing ingredient for mold to begin growing. If you control the moisture then mold growth is also controlled.
