Missouri residents, agents...etc, act NOW to stop the transfer tax.

What is the transfer tax?

A real estate transfer tax is a tax paid when you close on a property.  The tax would be a percentage of the total sales price charged/paid and paid by every seller, buyer or both at closing.

The taxes are often paid by people who have lived in their home for years and have already paid thousands of dollars in annual property taxes so transfer taxes are nothing more than double taxation.

Although transfer taxes are not currently imposed in the state of Missouri, the Missouri Constitution does allow state and local government to impose transfer taxes at any time. That being said with the current state of the economy and tax revenues falling, politicians are looking for ways to increase revenues from alternative sources.  Real estate transfer taxes are charged in other states, including Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Arkansas.

Ann, we have a conveyance tax (transfer tax) paid by the Seller here in Connecticut.  They got is passed about six years ago promising that the money would go to fixing our roads, and that it would sunset in three years.  Well more than three years have past and they have no intention with doing a way with the tax, and the money is going to everything and anything.  In fact they have been trying to in pose a conveyance tax on the Buyer on top of the conveyance tax on the Seller.  We have been able to stop the Buyer conveyance tax from happening but they keep on trying to add it each year.

Once they get their foot in the door they just keep on trying to get more and more.  Hope you guys are successful in stopping them.

Ann, we definitely need to get this on the ballot to amend the Missouri Constitution to prevent it. Its nothing more than double taxation and an excuse to spend more. I remember when they got the riverboat gambling passed. They promised all the money would go to the schools and that the riverboats would be sailing up and down the Mississippi. Last time I checked, neither is happening.

Hi Ann,

I have heard of this before, and it certainly sounds like a bad deal for everyone.  Do you know how much of a tax it would be, say on the sale of a $100,000 house?  I sure hope this never comes to Indiana.  Next thing I know there will be a bass or catfish tax!   ^_~

Hi Ann.  I was just looking at your home page with the arch in the background.  I was traveling back and forth through St. Louis when it was being built and it's fun to see a photo of it.

We still need about 60000 signatures on the petition and then we are off to the races.  This is going to make it on the ballot for November and we are going to win.

@Bruce.....If the tax is 1% of the sale price it is an additional cost at closing of $1,000 and if that goes to the state then what would your county be charging and then what about the city.  HMMMMM.

We have the tax in both PA and DE and it is generally split between the Buyer and Seller.  In PA, it actually varies by county and township and is usually 2-3% but the politicians love trying to raise it whenever they are looking for additional revenue.  For a while they were going to put on a surcharge to be used for mass transit, but with activity down, this proposal has disappeared for the time being.

Good luck with stopping them - we have a meeting on Thursday with one of the townships to try to stop another proposed increase in this area.

Betty and John,

It seems throwing the benefit of school improvement is something used too often.  The lottery promised the same.

Yes, we need to get the word out.  Stop double taxation!

Thanks for stopping by,

Ann
