About Porter County / Northwest Indiana
In 1836 Porter County was formed, with Portersville as the original "county seat" or capital of Porter County. In 1837, the Indiana General Assembly changed the name of the county seat to Valparaiso, which is derived from the Spanish term "velo del paraíso", which means "Vale of Paradise".
This name was, no doubt, chosen due to Valparaiso's many lakes and beaches, surrounded by bountiful farm lands.
Porter County is in Northwest Indiana, at the southernmost point of Lake Michigan. Porter County is nicely situated between Indianapolis, Chicago and the Motor City (Detroit, of course). Taking a trip to any of those three major cities is never more than a "day trip" away.
Eleven individual communities are located within Porter County:
- Ogden Dunes
- Burns Harbor - an official Indiana Port City
- Dune Acres
- Porter
- Beverly Shores - population 708!
- Pines
- Kouts
- Hebron
- Chesterton - home of Indiana Dunes State Park.
- Portage, and of course:
- Valparaiso - home of the outstanding Valparaiso Univesity, est. 1859
Porter County Home Builder - Steve Dalton
Located in beautiful Northwest Indiana, Steve Dalton is a home builder and president of Synergy Homes. The Synergy Homes website is full of useful information, including a page which compares the costs of building a home in Indiana, to the cost of renting. Steve is a David Bach reader and wants to help his clients become "millionaire homeowners"!
In addition to the "official" Synergy Homes website, Steve also maintains a blog, entitled (what else?), the Portage Indiana Home Builder.
Here is a sample from Steve's blog; this snippet is from an article on Down Payment Assistance:
"Right now, it appears that the Federal Government is attempting to shut down the Down Payment Assistance (DPA) business. I guess to be frank, I'd like them to stay out of it, leave it alone. Nehemiah, the largest DPA, would like to see more regulations since that would help them cement their near monopoly on the business.
I disagree and think that the DPA business should be left alone..."
I agree Steve! Read more about Down Payment Assistance in Indiana.
