Mother Nature Must Be On Drugs

By

This has to be the most unusual winter I have ever seen.

My sister lives in Scranton, Pa where we practice real estate.  Usually she gets some horrendous storms and snow accumulation.  Without fail every time I go up there it snows.  Grrrr.  This year they are well below their annual average.

  • In my part of Virginia, near Fredericksburg, we usually see one snow fall, maybe two per season.  Typically it snows one day and melts the next.  Our accumulation is hardly worth mentioning.

This year Mother Nature must really be on drugs.  As of early last week the Washington DC area was already up on their annual snow count by 2/3.  This past weekend another huge snow rolled in and some parts of Washington got between 28 - 40".  My sister got zero.

  • We have so much snow that strip centers and stores are obscured from the road, by the snow piled up in their parking lots.  Night crews are scooping snow from the sides of the roads, putting it in dump trucks and hauling it away.

Today I heard Vancouver is trucking and flying in snow for the Winter Olympics.  Geez, they should have held them in Washington DC.

We are expecting anywhere from 6 - 20" more starting today through Wednesday.  The radar map shows another storm forming for the weekend.

                                          Enough already!

Jackie,  I don't mind snow - as long as I do not have to shovel it.  I've certainly gotten lots of practice recently.

Bonnie - While we have had only 1/2" of snow this year (we frequently get none) the temps have been significantly colder, with one 14 day period when the temp never rose above 32 degrees.

I am SO over the whole SNOW thing....50 years ago, I'd have loaded my skiis on the back of my Ford Fairlane convertible and headed to the Homestead to ski....40 years ago, I'd have gotten my skiis out of storage and flown to the Big Island and loaded in a 4WD and skiied Goodrich cone...30 years ago I'd have loaded my skiis on the roof rack of my Datson SW and headed to Tahoe to ski.....Today, I had to go to my office and get WORK to put checks in the mail before MORE SNOW!!!

Bonnie - I think your sister will get this weeks snow, it is sliding a little more northward than the last storm. As for Vancouver Olympics, that was an iffy pick since this lack of snow is a not unusual event for the area.

Michael, Like a fool I thought I could buy a snow blower on Thursday.  Most years they are left over in Va.  Lowe's does not even stock them anymore.

My shovel is working over time.

John,  I do not think our temps have been lower.  Although we do not get a lot of snow we usually go through at least one week of zero temps. I have not seen that this year.

Wallace,  I was over the snow thing the first time around.  We are now looking at the 4th.  Possibly the 5th coming in behind this one.  I'm ready to go down and visit Nick.

Nick,  I only remember one snow in my lifetime that was worse than this.  In the 1960's when I still lived in Jersey.  Back then I thought it was fun.

The snow pattern is really weird this year.  I have a cousin in Virginia and she is sick of the snow.

Bonnie - cold, with some flurries except in the mountains, where it's a dusting. We had our big snow last year (I hope).
