Cary, NC: Beware the Craigslist Rental Scams

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Realty Arts NC Broker License #235526

The message below was forwarded to me by a very nice young lady who had called about renting an Active For Sale listing I have.
IF it was for rent, and it is NOT, market rental would be in the $1300-$1500/month range.

The Scammers put it on Craigslist at $800/month.
That is a clue.
"If it looks too good to be true, it usually is."

I like the lease terms:  "As long as you wish."
Yep, once we steal your $700 deposit, you can have the place forever.  If you can convince the rightful owner to move out.

The sad thing is, people fall for these scams, and they are typically people who are counting every penny and cannot afford the loss.  People wire money out of the country to rent homes they have never been inside.  From people they have never met.  And the money is gone, never to be recovered.

The best thing to do is avoid, ignore, report, and move on.  The young lady answered the ad out of curiosity.  I hope she drops it.
I have heard stories of people baiting the scammers, and taunting and abusing them via email.  And I have heard anecdotal tales of criminals following up and attacking respondents to these ads.

Caveat Emptor Maximus!

It is sad but true, those scams are out there.  we have to be so careful out there these days.  This all the more reason for buyers - sellers - renters to enlist the services of a professional Realtor for their real estate needs.

I always hear of these scams but hadn't heard of them yet in this area until NOW!  Wow, that is so scary!  And, yes, there are many who might fall for this so thanks for getting this word out in our area!  I think I'll reblog for my readers!

Christine,

I refer to a handful of "Real" property managers or tell folks to search Realtor.com for many rentals.

Craigslist is just a minefield anymore.

Leesa,

It is definitely here, and has been for over a year.  One story: An agent in my office had a woman come by a few months ago.  The woman had wired $900 out of the country for a rental that my co-worker had listed.  Instead of calling my co-worker at her number on her sign, the woman went with the Craigslist ad.  The loss came at a very difficult time for her.

Oh!  Reblog, fer sherr!  I hope it helps someone.

Dispicable that someone would stoop so low as to prey on those who are just looking for a place to live.

Good job making this information available to the masses.

Craig,

I just got off the phone with my 4th caller on this ad.

People are calling me to warn me about it, and that makes me feel good about their alertness.

It also makes me worry about how many people may be sucked into a scam like this.

Wow Mike, I didn't know you'd moved to the UK...and you took the poor guys keys with you?

It is sadly for this reason that I do not put listings on Craigslist anymore. Not that the scammer couldn't find the info elsewhere and do it anyway but I generally believe they are too lazy (except of course, for the active mind games they are playing) to do much research elsewhere.

SarahGray,

I actually believe the scammer checked the Wake County Tax site to put the owner's name in the Yahoo email address.

That level of work indicates less laziness.

Hi Mike!  Here from Leesa's re-blog!

I just report these scammers to Craigslist and the State Attorney General's office. One time the SAG referred me to the FBI but, since then, they have taken my complaints without further ado.  If you have listings, it's going to happen.  They use your photos, your information, etc.  One lady that I showed a property today (to buy) said that she saw it listed for rent on Craigslist this morning before her showings.  I explained that the property is not for rent (only for sale).  She is sending me the information from his email correspondence and she is going to report the guy as well.  I think the vast majority of these scammers are from Nigeria.

The WORST thing besides the loss of funds immediately, is that they're giving out their Social Security number--to me, that's what needs to be addressed as quickly as possible.  One phoned me last week with a similar situation--she thought she was going to rent the property.  Sent the 'credit check' and the deposit and drove to the house to check it out--she was sitting in the cul-de-sac when she phoned me to ask about the 'rental.'  She KNEW my answer before I even gave it to her and she screamed that she would phone me back.  She was able to stop payment on the check and then phoned me back.  I asked her if she had used her SS # on anything and she screamed again!  She went to the SS Department but, has not gotten back to me as to the outcome.  These guys need to get REAL jobs!

Just like you said, If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!  I would add to that--NEVER put your Social Security number on a document that is not an official bank or financial document--be VERY careful with that. Identity theft is a HUGE issue to resolve--a $900 check can be made up but, the SS#...

Debi,

Yes, the verbage is a tipoff, too.

SarahGray,

Another downside to full transparency in public documents?

Debe,

This has become pervasive enough, Craigslist needs to post a note at the top of Rentals warning people about rental scams.

I agree, Mike.  I think there is a warning notice but, I don't think many people read it--it needs to be 'flash' warnings that pop up, say every other time you click on a rental.

Have a great day...
