A hearty congratulations goes out to Carmel Elementary School in Woodstock GA, recently selected as a 2010 Georgia School of Character by the Character Education Partnership (CEP), one of only two schools in Georgia recognized for this honor. The school is located just west of I-575 and north of Highway 92 and serves the nearby neighborhoods.
Carmel was recognized as a result of the school's Learn and Serve program, in which students combine learning with community service projects. According to the AJC, the program is logged after Learn and Serve America, a national program that provides grants to schools that engage students in service-learning opportunities. Carmel Elementary School has been honored before for their program, winning the Promising Practices Award from CEP in 2006, 2207 and 2008.
While Carmel initially received funding from the state Department of Education, the school now operates the program without outside funding. Carmel is now in the running for the National Award- and we wish them the best!
