A story on MSN today discussed to pros and cons of buying a home with a pool. Setting aside personal preferences, I thought about the debate over resale value. Obviously, if you're not going to use your pool, the it's just a hole in the ground that you'll pour money into. But I see value coming from the approprate placement of a pool. If the lot or the house is too small and the pool dominates the yard, then you'll definately hurt resale value. But at a certain price point and lot size, a pool can enhance value. Especially attractive are the pools that blend into the landscape. This way, there's a benefit even when you're not using your pool.

If the pool shouldn't take up the entire backyard, probably 80% of the homes in the Dallas area shouldn't have the pools that they do. When it's house after house after house, the lots aren't large enough, on average, to have a pool and a yard. It must be regional value.

In Florida, you're definitely at a disadvantage if you don't have a pool. Most people don't want to go through the hassle of adding one.

I agree with Sharon, in Florida your home is almost expected to have a pool and you are generally at a disadvantage if you don't have one. Your pool can practically be used year round.

We have better resale chances in a neighborhood of homes with pools than those without. Unless the community has a community pool and that is just a bigger hole ..I mean please pond..

I have found "the pool decreases the value to be not so"!
I find that only " buyers who want a pool" are looking at these homes. But they say "the pool does not add any value".
Buyers who do NOT want a pool will not look!
