                       Valentine's Day Fun Facts

Did you know?

About 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are exchanged in the US each year.  That is the largest seasonal card sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas.

Women purchase 85% of all valentines.

In order of popularity - Valentine's Day cards are given to teachers, children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.

Parents receive 1 out of every 5 valentines.

About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine's Day gifts to their pets. - Shhhh don't tell my cat - she won't be getting anything :)

Worldwide, over 50 million roses are given for Valentin's Day each year.

California produces 60% of the American roses, but the vast number sold on Valentine's Day in the US are imported - mostly from South America.  The majority of the roses are red and they will be sold and delivered with a three-day period.

73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine's Day are men.  And they buy most of the candy too.

Over $1 billion worth of chocolate is purchased for Valentin's Day in the US.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be.  They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week.  To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for others to know how you are feeling.

Richard Cadbury invented the first Valentines Day candy box in the late 1800's.  (I still remember when I was a little girl getting candy in a heart shaped box every Valentines Day from my mom!)

To be awoken by a kiss on Valentine's Day is considered lucky.

They say if you see a squirrel on Valentine's Day, you will marry a cheapskate who will hoard all your money.  If you see a goldfinch you will marry a millionaire.  If you see a robin you will marry a crime fighter.  If you see a flock of doves you will have a happy and peaceful marriage.

In the US 64% of men do not make plans in advance for a romantic Valentine's Day with their sweethearts.

In medieval times, girls ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day to dream of their future spouse.

The heart is the most common symbol of romantic love.

On Valentine's Day, women prefer to open their gifts after a nice dinner while men prefer to receive presents first thing in the morning.  Do you have a preference?

Hope you enjoyed these fun facts and I hope have a wonderful Valentin's Day!

Those are some fun facts! I am sure my wife will get a kick out of them; I will be sure to show her. I think the fact about the medieval times is rather entertaining; I can only imagine what they ate.

Bridget - very fun.  We too have a b-day in our family...  My nieces husband is Sunday and my husband's is Monday.  Tell her happy birthday for me.

Michael - I too wondered what they ate.  I went to several websites trying to see if I could find that, but they all just kept saying they "bizarre" foods.

Have a nice Valentine's Day!   ...geri

Geri, I just love this post!  It's a whole lot more than I ever knew about Valentine's day.  My only worry about tomorrow is that there are many more squirrels around here than there are gold finches, robins or doves!

Geri,

Thank you for these fun facts.  It does not matter for me when I receive a gift on Valentione's Day.  I am OK even if it is after dinner and at the end of the day.  it is the thought that counts. Happy Valentine's Day to you!

Well, I noted a squirrel on my patio this afternoon.  Does this really mean that I "will marry a cheapskate who will hoard all my money."  I hope not!!!

Hi Geri,  I don't get the whole " pets angle ".  Are these the same folks who send gifts to the soap opera stars ?
