La Quinta Resort and Club, one of the Palm Sprigs original destination resorts and Hollywood getaways since 1926, moved a step closer to implementing its major restoration and renovation master plan this month, when it received unanimous approval from the La Quinta Historic Preservation Commission. The 5-0 decision marks the first formal vote on the $300 million master plan project which will add 631 hotel rooms and nearly 90,000 square feet of additional banquet and commercial space.

During the meeting, Historic Preservation Commissioners noted the Resort's commitment to leaving all historic elements of the property untouched with the exception of the Resort Core, the Morgan House and La Casa, which once restored will be considered for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Restoration Master Plan will be implemented in four phases (each phase taking 18-24 months to build):

Phase I Resort Core: Ballroom Expansion, underground parking, guest rooms, food & beverage and retail. Phase I also includes back of house improvements and relocation to underground facilities.

Phase II Spa Wellness/Lodging: A new Spa Wellness Center, with complementary guest room offerings, and expansion and enhancement of the pool area.

Phase III Villas/Hotel Rooms: A replacement of casitas to the east with a new product specific (TBD) guest rooms/suites lodging product.

Phase IV Boutique Hotel: Replacement of existing Back of House facilities with new guest rooms/suites.

With a roughly one year planned break between each phase, the total project is expected to take 11-12 years to complete. However, timing and phasing of construction is at the sole discretion of the developer and discretionary subject to economic and market conditions. Therefore, it is still largely uncertain when the project will begin and end. For more information on the La Quinta Resort Restoration Plan, log on to www.laquintaresortplan.com
