Where did Lindsey Vonn learn to ski?

By
Industry Observer

Olympian Lindsey Vonn was raised in Apple Valley, MN, where she lived while learning to ski.  Her original training site was Buck Hill,  located within the boundaries of the Apple Valley High School attendance area in the city of Burnsville. Lindsey began her racing career on the Buck Hill Ski Racing Team before moving to Colorado.

Some news organizations describe Buck Hill as a "bump with only a tow rope."  That is not totally accurate.  There were several chair lifts at Buck hill long before Lindsey was born, and the "bump" was good enough to produce numerous competitive skiers.  The first time I stood on top of Buck Hill, it did feel a bit like standing on the hood of my car.  It is a bump, albeit a very productive and popular bump.

Best wishes to Apple Valley's Favorite Daughter.  We're hopeful and confident that she will represent our country well in Vancouver.

Isn't it odd how announcers alwasy want to make the "country bumpkin does good" kind of story?

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Most of them have no idea of what actually goes on in "flyover" country.  They can't believe that, just because you can't see salt water from your front porch, you may actually have a life worth living in a place worth living in.  Nothing against "edge" country, but there's way more than just that.

Mike I was just thinking of where she might have started skiing. Buck Hill - ha - it truly is a little bump!  We used to have a lake home on Pearl Lake near Power Ridge.  We always called it Powder Bump.  After college I got a job in Vail Co and that's where I really learned to ski.  Not like Lindsey by a LONG shot!!   It's so cool that she got the gold yesterday - and maybe today.  MN girls Rock!

I can see that "bump" out my office window and remember skiing there as a kid.  I have been spoiled by skiing out west (actually just got back from Breckenridge on Tuesday), but maybe I will bring my daughter there and see if she can be an olympic hopeful...or maybe a doctor...probably easier to be a doctor.

Great instructors apparently trump little bumps.  It could be an advantage when you're learning racing fundamentals without the temptation to just go skiing.  Buck Hill probably can't offer much to prepare a competitor for downhill or super g.

Actually, Buck Hill is not in the country.  It's an urban location about a half hour out of downtown Minneapolis.  Metro population exceeds 3 million.  This just happens to be a hotbed of development for winter sports.  The St. paul Curling club, with around 1300 members, may be the largest in this country.  Three of the scorers in the US Canada final hockey game played their high school hockey about 30 miles south of Buck Hill at Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault.  Most of the metro high schools have indoor ice arenas.
