ST. AUGUSTINE FOUNDER'S BIRTHDAY TO BE CELEBRATED AT LAVISH 16th CENTURY BALL - Noche de Gala
We are only 5 years away from the 450th celebration of the nation's oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida. On February 27th, St. Augustine will be celebrating the 491st birthday of don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, the founder of the city of St. Augustine with a lavish Noche de Gala.
There will be re-enactors with an impressive banquet and a colorful ball with guests wearing authentic 16th century clothing or black tie.
This year the gala will have Chaz Mena playing the role of Menendez, the Spanish admiral who founded St. Augustine on September 9, 1565. Mena is known for his role as Judge Montaldo on NBC's Law and Order. Mena has portrayed Menendez before. Last year he gave a performance as Menendez at a First Florida presentation in St. Augustine. He will interact with the guests at Noche de Gala. So, be ready with your questions and to be entertained, as you are educated on St. Augustine's history.
The celebration will begin at 5 p.m. at the ancient City Gate at the north end of St. George Street. Led by re-enactors, Noche de Gala guests will proceed to the Lightner Museum in a royal procession.
At the Lightner, they will celebrate the birthday of Menendez at a cocktail reception followed by dinner and dancing in the museum's ballroom. Some of the re-enactors are peasants that enjoy the gala from the bottom floor of the magnificent ballroom. There will be strolling musicians, heralding horns, magicians, and swordsmen. As a past guest of this gala, I can assure you it is a lot of fun! It used to be a masked ball and it was fun surprising people.
The Noche de Gala is a fundraiser for the City of St. Augustine's historic preservations efforts. Please come. Here's the invitation. Please RSVP by February 17th.
Tickets are available for $185 per person for the full evening celebration or $50 for the cocktail reception only.
