Believing vs. Kinda Believing - How Committed Are You?

"One person with a belief is equal to a force of 99 who have only interests."
~ John Stuart Mill, 1806-1873

I'm still not sure why it is, but so many real estate agents that I meet seem to have only one foot in Do you have just one foot in?their business. If you had to give an absolutely rock-solid declaration of where you are, would you say you have a BELIEF in your skills and talents as a REALTOR® and in the utmost success of your business ... or are you merely interested in pursuing it, in the hopes that you might somehow make it work?

The thing about a BELIEF in your success is that you know to your core that you've got what it takes. You have the ability to ignore the naysayers ... you sashay right past all those doom-and-gloom folks who use the new economy as their excuse for not getting leads and closing sales. When people tell you it can't be done, that's all the invitation you need to find a way to do it, whether it's sell a million-dollar house, land a high-net-worth client, or hire a dozen new agents.

When you have a BELIEF, you are single-minded in your focus. You know how many buyers and/or sellers you need to meet this quarter to stay on task with your goals, and you have a plan to do so.

No one and no thing can shake you or move you off course when you truly have a BELIEF in yourself. Can you imagine anyone getting in this guy's way? Never!

What will it take for you to get THIS kind of BELIEF?

So next time you find yourself allowing the doubts to penetrate your spiky armor, I challenge you to remember Mill's quote ... and resurrect your core BELIEF about yourself, your skills, your success. It's not what others think you can or cannot do ... it's what you BELIEVE and know to be true.

Anna, Thank you so much for that! You MUST BELIEVE in what you're doing, otherwise, why do it? I needed this today.

Anna, You found the perfect quote to go with your blog....There is a Chinese proverb (which I can't recall off the top of my head) but the last line is "The BELIEF is the thing that makes it HAPPEN."  I'm paraphrasing as well but when I find it, I'll send it over!

Anna, I would have to believe that with the current market etc, anybody that is still working in real estate has the belief. The people that were here when all you needed to do to get a sale was to answer the phone are working somewhere else. That just makes the rest of us more credible, or should I saw incredible.

Anna-  Thank you for the wonderful reminder of how important it is to always believe in ourselves.  Afterall, if we can't believe in ourselves, who else will want to?  I found your post as I was looking through AR for thoughts and ideas to help my establish myself as exclusively a buyer's agent.  Your post really hit home, as I hear daily that I won't be able to make a living if I don't take listings.  In my area, there is not one other agent that exclusively works with buyers, as everyone believes the old "He who has the listings has the business."  Thank you for reminding me that when someone tells me I can't, that must propel me to show them I can!

You nailed the problem with most sales people in all kinds of sales. When I started my sales career years ago selling Mack Trucks a veteran trainer said to me "son if you do not believe in yourself and your product how do you expect anybody else to".

Anna,

When people have told me that I could not do something, I've told them to "hide and watch"...  Such a whole-hearted blog post to encourage others to go for it!  I love it!

Wow, I love this post, thank you so much for writing it. It seems that there are 3 groups of agents out there- 1: Those which are comfortable with themselves and commited to this profession, because it is their passion. 2-There are people who have a fear of actually succeding and 3-There are people who have a fear of failing.

Without a full commitment and a belief system in yourself, how is it possible for an agent to convince a buyer or seller to use them instead of someone else?
