Presidents Day
The February holiday, Presidents Day, has become well-known for being a day in which many stores, especially car dealers, hold sales, but there's a lot more to the holiday. Presidents Day is a good chance to learn more about American History, civic responsibility and even U.S. Geography.
Presidents Day, officially known as Washington's Birthday, is a federal holiday in the United States and is celebrated on the third Monday of February. This year Presidents Day falls on February 15. Presidents Day was originally designated in honor of George Washington's birthday and is still legally called "Washington's Birthday."
The first president of the United States was born on February 22, 1732. Only the District of Columbia celebrated the holiday at first, but Washington's Birthday became a holiday for all federal offices in 1885. Abraham Lincoln's birthday was celebrated on February 12. Some states had Lincoln Day and the birthday eventually become a national holiday. In 1971, both Washington and Lincoln's birthday celebrations were shifted to the third Monday in February when the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was implemented. Advertisers began using the term "Presidents' Day" and this use gradually became commonly accepted. It is one of the biggest retail sales days in the country. In certain states the holiday is designated "Presidents Day" instead of "Presidents' Day," and some states honor all the presidents on that holiday.
Local government decides whether schools are open or closed, parking regulations are in effect and what services are provided on that day. In Horry County in South Carolina school and banks are closed on this day.
