New hotel opens in Nags Head BY PAUL J. GORZKOWSKI | SENTINEL STAFF (Paul Gorzkowski | Sentinel) Overlooking the sound, the newly-built Oasis Suites on the Causeway in Nags Head offers visitors a beautiful view of the water as well as Manteo, Wanchese, Nags Head and Bodie Island. Brothers David and Derek Hatchell are owners of the 1.75-acre site of the former Oasis Restaurant that burned down in March 2004. Afterwards, the brothers decided that it was time to consider going into the hotel business. Jamie Hatchell, David Hatchell's wife said the restaurant business on the Outer Banks is a tough business and that's why the Hatchells decided to use the property to build a hotel. The name Oasis was kept because it has been used in relation to businesses on the property since the late 1940's. The 16,000-square-foot facility was designed by the Cahoon and Kasten architectual firm. Jamie said the cost for the total project was about $2 million. Each of the 17 suites has its own full size kitchen. A honeymoon suite has a gas fireplace, heart shaped jet spa tub and king size bed. Lillie Rowling, Jamie Hatchell's mother, said no two rooms are alike; each was designed by Ricky Lane. "I wanted each room to offer a different experience," said Jamie. Oasis Suites also has a handicapped accessible suite located on the first floor. Guests have access to an elevator located in the center of the building or indoor stairwells on opposite sides of the facility leading to the second and third floors. All concrete, including the 22 space parking lot was specially designed by Hatchell Concrete, also owned by David and Derek Hatchell. Each suite has two or more beds, either king or full size, along with a private balcony over looking the sound. Other amenities include an exercise room with state of the art fitness machines, a 20-by-40-square-foot swimming pool from two to six foot deep, an outdoors hot tub, boat docks, and a board walk leading to a gazebo over looking the sound. There are food and drink vending machines on the second and third floors and guests also have access to a coined laundry room located on the second floor. Jamie said that the Hatchells currently are talking about adding wedding packages for those who would like to get married in the gazebo, and a weekly or monthly payment package for guests who plan to stay longer than a few nights to a week at the time. But for now they will only be charging for per night stays. Oasis Suites officially opened for business on Monday, July 9. Its 24-hour customer service desk also offers guests wakeup calls.
