From the age of enlightenment to the age of entitlement.
What is going on? Is it your birthright to own a home and to get a tax credit thrown in? Call me old and cranky, but I read a question in a Q & A forum that has had me fuming for 2 days now.
The question was "I have found a house and want to take advantage of the new home buyer tax credit. I am married and as a couple we do not quality for the credit due to our combined income. Can i apply for a mortgage with both our names but have the title in my wife's name? This way when she files her taxes she can file married filing separately and qualify for some of the credit."
It sounds like this potential home buyer has done their homework, and knows they don't qualify. But he or she is now looking to REALTORS® and/ or mortgage professionals to play the system and skirt the current government regulations.
I wanted to shout, "YOU MAKE MORE MONEY THAN MOST OF MY CLIENTS, SUCK IT UP AND PLAY BY THE RULES!"
I am getting older, and a little cranky, but I feel much better now!
Everyone is looking to have someone "owe them" ....we had a wanna be second time buyer who had his equity snatched and he was all over everyone who got the tax credits he did not get....and now he didn;t have the equity he deserved and by gosh he was going to do the same thing to the seller he bought from...they don't deserve equity if he wasn't getting any....getting "even" never makes you that way....Blog on Laura !
That's why most systems breakdown and don't work properly.....there are always people who do not qualify, but they are going to make sure they get a piece of the action....incredible.
You're NOT cranky! It really puts me in a tizzy as well to see the priviledge of homeownership taken so lightly! You sure did hit the nail on the head with the title of the post! Age of Enlightenment to Age of Entitlement -sad!
Those are the type of emails that I say please talk to your tax advisor and/or accountant. The IRS has already prosecuted thousands of cases of fraud related to the tax credit. If buyers want to play fast and loose with the rules they can stand in line and wait for the IRS to come after them as well.
While I don't support breaking the rules, I do object that the rule is there in the first place!
Another case of the "government" using our money to cause people to behave badly because the "government" has an agenda for us! I wonder how many of the homes purchased because of the tax credit will be in foreclosure in the next 2 years!
Laura, the government set up these programs, to help first timers...but over the years government programs have always been worked to help the rich get richer...that is the down side of the intent of any government program.
Hi Laura:
Yes...I've heard the same. Unbelievable, isn't it...
I think because they expanded the tax credit to existing homeowners is why we are being asked these questions.
I was, and still am, against the whole tax credit game. But, if someone is eligible for the government give away - they should try to get it.
Someone will always find the loophole in any rule or regulation. If everyone just played by the rules, we would never be in some of the messes we're currently in.
Laura, the sooner we get out of this give away stuff, the sooner people will get back into a serious life style. Right now, everyone wants a peice of the other persons pie and their own also.
Laura, you are right. I spend too much time answering questions about this topic. Or, getting a name off a loan that someone co-signed, etc etc

I believe that rules in the country are change to old fashion core values.
Good luck and success.

I would have to say that I am getting old and cranky myself. Everyone feels like this world owes them something just for being born.
I stay away from people who want to do such things and advice them never to cheat the IRS.
