Film Review from Ocean City, New Jersey ... a BEACH NOTES "occasional extra"

Mostly my wife and I get our films after the fast ... but there are two times of the year that we try to get out to see films where one should really see all films ... on the big screen.  Those times are often New Year's Eve or Day ... and before the Academy Awards.  We try to get to an early feature ... pay less, with less noise from younger viewers who all hate the kind of films we go to see.  I like that aspect.

So we saw "Crazy Hearts" last week ... the down and dirty story of "Bad Blake" a country singer who drifts across the southwest playing in almost any kind of location (that I probably haven't been in since my early twenties).  He drinks too much, sleeps around, and has written great songs that have made other singers famous.  But he continues on.

It reminds me of "Tender Mercies," a film with Robert Duvall (who had a small part in this one) which came out maybe 20 years ago.  Jeff Bridges will win an Academy Award for this excellent performance ... he has had numerous excellent ones and will be a popular choice.  Magge Gyl... (can't find the correct spelling for her last name) did a great supporting role as the younger woman falling in love with the wrong fellow at the right time.  She has also been nominated, but she will not win this time.

It's a sad, down-and-out type of story which doesn't leave you high and dry at the end.  My wife didn't like it ... I did.  But it is a true type of story of life on the road, it has its very highs and lows throughout the film.  I enjoyed the music as well ... a throw-back to my country and western time of life.

Get out to see this one ... or like many, wait until it makes it to pay-tv.                         dap
