The Blizzard of 2010 - Gaithersburg, MD

The Blizzard of 2010 was one for the record books.  Actually, this was 2 snowstorms.  In Gaithersburg, MD, we had 3 feet of snow!

In the wee hours of Saturday, February 6, I was woken by silence.  It's amazing how much noise is around you that you just tune out.  The furnace wasn't blowing, the fan was whirling.....just silence.  But outside....what a sight.  It was so exciting and romantice until I did what I do upon waking every morning -- head straight to the coffee pot!  Nuts!  No electricity!!  After several hours, it got "less dark".  The Blizzard of 2010 Gaithersburg, MD

You can barely see my house!!  Forget driving to Starbucks!  My husband suggested that I boil water on the gas grill and then pour it gently into the Mr. Coffee coffee maker.  I tried -- it was the worst!!

We kept a fire going all day for heat and then I warmed up left overs on the grill for our dinner.  I kept a bottle of wine in a nearby snowdrift, and we had a wonderful evening!Jane Taylor, Gaithersburg, MD

The lights came on at 6:00 pm -- just as it was pretty well full dark.  Hurray!

Sounds like you made the most of the situation.  I've done the snow melting for water thing when we lived in the Ozarks.. it takes an amazing amount of snow to make  a pot of coffee!

Jane--I am smiling from ear to ear as I write this comment.  Glad you survived to write about it.  Fortunately it is easier to survive a snowstorm than an earthquake and I bet your morning coffee the following day was absolutely wonderful.

Our southern vacation had been extended one day due the second storm that hit your area.  When we drove up I-95 and around the DC beltway on Feb. 11th the roads were bare and there was very little traffic.
