Chandler’s Newest Park…Paseo Vista Recreational Area

Paseo Vista Recreational Area is in south Chandler, it is not officially open yet…but the city has allowed us to roam around this park. The 64-acre park is at the northwest corner of McQueen and Ocotillo Road and has so many cool features.

• disc golf course

• dog park

• kids playgrounds

• 1 mile jogging paths

• picnic areas

The history of this park is quite the story. The park sits atop 2.2 million tons of compacting trash 38-feet deep that will continue to decompose and shift the upper level. This movement prevented Chandler from building any hard-court surfaces, such as basketball courts and tennis courts, on the top. Most of the surface is made up of decomposed granite or a rubberized surface. The only sign showing that this park was one a landfill is the methane-gas venting stations around the park. That is the reason for the “NO Smoking” signs all around the park.

Some have nicknamed Paseo Vista Recreational Area the “Mount Chandler” and even “Mud Chandler.” The views from on top of the park are pretty amazing, just this morning on our walk through the park, my husband and I watched “fighter” planes take off from Chandler Airpark and land. (I’m thinking they were WWII planes) But you can definitely see Phoenix, Superstition Mountains, Four Peaks, South Mountain and the Santan Mountains from just one point.
