The Acreage- Palm Beach County Florida- Cancer Cluster- Realtors® To Disclose Cancer Findings
The Palm Beach Post, The Town Crier and the SunSentinal all are printing nothing but negative stories about the cancer cluster in the Acreage. This is really getting the residents upset that happen to be trying to sell their homes as there is only one section of the Acreage that is experiencing this mysterious rise in brain cancer.
The emotions are running high with those who are affected and have family members affected by cancer tumors and then you also have the other side of the Acreage where homeowners are in deep financial straits trying to sell their homes as short sales only to find out that banks such as Suntrust are denying buyer loans for the reason of the "possibility" that there me a cancer cluster.
The first findings conducted by the state of Florida department of health and enviromental departments found that there was nothing in the ground that could be causing the high cases of brain tumors. The state department of Health is doing a second phase investigation and has confirmed that the number of brain and central nervous system tumors is higher than in the children that live in this cluster of the Acreage. They have discovered 13 cases of brain cancer or tumors in children and teenagers from 1993 to 2008 .There were more cases in girls than in boys.
in the Online Palm Beach Post article discussing the situation they quoted different real estate agents and also a homeowner. In the comment stream the anger was certain from homeowners and residents who still live in the Acreage areas without any health issues. According to one of the commenters, the homeowner that they Palm Beach Post quoted to say that this cancer scare is causing her house not to sell said that she has her house overpriced by over $40,000 and that is why it is not selling. There are still people buying homes and selling homes.
There is a population of 28,000 to 32,000 people living in the Acreage. The jump in the case occurred after 2002. Some people are speculating that the cause may be with the well water. Some Acreage residents want the county to bring in water lines and change from their well water to city water lines. But many people who pay taxes in Palm Beach County don't want to foot the bill for the people who chose to buy a house on well water. This is going to be a heated discussion for some time forward.
From the Palm Beach Post:
"Newly released demographic data show that from 2002 through 2007, the community had more cases of some types of childhood cancer than would normally be expected in a population of that size.
- Childhood brain cancer: 2-3 case expected. Actual: 5 cases.
- Brain cancer in girls: 1-2 expected. Actual: 4 cases.
What’s next?
- 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 9: Palm Beach County health officials will discuss their interviews with affected families and their population research at Seminole Ridge High School, 4601 Seminole Pratt Whitney Road, Loxahatchee.
- Mid-March: The state Department of Health expects to complete the second phase of its investigation. At that point it will decide whether to launch a third or fourth phase of investigation"
