Inductive Bible Study, Sermon on a Page

Jesus is looking for a few good Christians to teach others how to read and understand His word, relying only on the Bible to reveal the lessons He has taught.

I have discovered a quick and easy Bible study method taught by Dr. Lee Gugliotto Ph D. Lee who has developed an independent ministry dedicated to teaching others how to read, study and understand the Bible on their own. This quick method will accomplish two goals. It saves time in preparing sermons and creates instant lessons for group discussions.

This quick method of Bible study is based on the fact scripture is written in sequence, where the inspired author maintains a train of thought patterns conveying the same thought from one story, parable or prophecy to the next. This is known as a form of poetry, not made up of words which rhyme, rather thoughts which agree. When these thought patterns are collected through careful study and attention to detail, they explain one another, making the texts easier to understand and conveying the complete thought, subject by subject.

Although the exact method of this study is all but impossible to explain by using only words, the results are clearly seen in the following examples. Teaching the exact method can only be accomplished in the presence of a teacher. It takes about ten minutes to master this method when the details are revealed in a personal one on one setting.

The basis of this study method lies in the context of the Bible. It requires a Study Bible which contains headings, dividing texts into individual trains of thought or paragraphs, some times known as stories, parables or prophecies. Details of every paragraph are explained in the surrounding paragraphs. Comparing the thoughts in these paragraphs by identifying common words is the first and easiest step. Take for example nouns; a person, place or thing. Collecting all the texts on a person identifies facts about that person, revealing a clear understanding. Common words identify information or thought patterns. The goal is to identify words or patterns which are the same, similar or related.

When learning this method of Bible study, as the actual lesson is being taught all the same, similar or related words between texts are highlighted using a different color for each word. This is a very visual study, an important step and useful tool. This draws the student into a detailed study of the word. As the student searches from text to text to identify the same, similar of related words, they will automatically look much deeper into each word, line, and thought.

It cannot be explained any easier. This allows time for the Holy Spirit to work on the minds of all who study. You will be surprised at the results when you see a whole group of people draw the same conclusion from a text, any text. It may be a text you read a hundred times and never noticed the detail before, and now all those around you have just discovered a deeper understanding of God’s word. Nothing can explain the feeling when two or three are gather and they all agree. This is why it is important to study scripture with scripture.

The following examples will consider only one key text in the paragraph. The same method can be used on the entire paragraph. Read the entire paragraphs in your Bible to gain an understanding of the context.

Example 1: Comparing Jesus’ end time prophecies to the following paragraph, Judas making arrangements to betray Jesus.

KJV Luke 21:28. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

What are the events that will come to pass? To find these events we first look at the paragraph immediately following this text. At first glance it may seem the following paragraph about Jesus’ betrayal has nothing in common with the text being studied, but the inspired author has added details which are the same, similar or related. The key thought in Luke 21:28 concerns events. Locate texts relating to events.

KJV Luke 22:4. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. 5. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.

KJV Luke 22:11. And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

Two events can be clearly identified in the following paragraph; Judas betrays and arrangements are made for Jesus to share the passover with his disciples.

This identifies two classes which will exist in the last days, those who will be against Jesus and those who will be with Him.

Now search the previous paragraph for texts containing events.

KJV Luke 21:6. As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

This is a prophecy Jesus spoke concerning Herod’s temple in Jerusalem. Is there also a spiritual connection to last day events? Peter describes a spiritual house made of living stones.

KJV 1 Peter 2:5. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Just before the coming of Jesus, the spiritual stones will be torn down.

KJV Luke 21:8. And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

Verse 8 describes how these spiritual stones will be torn down.

KJV Luke 21:15. For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. 16. And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.

The paragraph following Luke 21:28 revealed there will be two classes of people, those betraying Christ and those sharing supper. The paragraph before Luke 21:28 explains additional details describing these two classes. Those close to Jesus will be given a mouth and wisdom. Although they will not be the most popular people, neither were Noah or Lot. How many people followed them?

You can see how this quick study method reveals details which can be used to create sermons and discussions for a study groups.

Example 2: Comparing Judas’ betrayal of Jesus to Peter’s denial.

KJV Luke 22:21. But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.

Almost everyone will identify Judas as the one who betrayed Jesus. When we read the entire text in the following paragraph we see there is more to the story. Look for another train of thought concerning a betrayal.

KJV Luke 22:34. And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.

We find Judas was not the only disciple to betray Jesus. Peter went as far as denying Jesus three times.

KJV Luke 22:4. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. 5. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. 6. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

When we look at the previous paragraph we find the story of Judas betraying Jesus for a sum of money.

As you can see, this quick method of Bible study reveals much more than a casual reading. The act of going back and forth from line to line allows the Holy Spirit to impress the mind and expand the understanding. I know of no quicker method of studying the Bible and gaining a deeper understanding.
