This world-famous resort, in south Carlsbad, was built in the mid 60s, when the hills were bare and the developer envisioned a fabulous golf course in the valley below the hills, just minutes from the ocean. Accommodations were originally built as the Rancho La Costa Inn to house guests, and the area became a magnet for good times for the Hollywood jet set and the Rat Pack (local homes in the area, built soon after the golf course) were reportedly rented by or built for many of these celebrities. The spa was later added, as was the Chopra Center, a world renowned wellness center founded by Dr. Deepak Chopra. La Costa Spa and Resort offers a lifestyle that is unique in this part of California, to the best of my knowledge. The golf there (there are 2 18-hole courses, North and South, plus a driving range) is excellent, with a legendary history (ArnoldPalmer, Tiger Woods, the Accenture Match Play Championships which has moved to a new facility after 2006) but there is so much more. La Costa, owned by KSL, has gone through a massive $140 million renovation to enhance the lifestyle they offer visitors, area residents, and guests. Here are a few highlights:
Chopra Center - a myriad of treatments, yoga, and a center for "new age" healing and health Spa - the place to pamper yourself for a hour, a half day or longer, with a variety of massages, facials, body treatments, hydrotherapy and much more. There is also an 8,000 SF athletic club with a variety of classes. And stop by on Thrusday evening (make a reservation) for their "Spa under the Stars" event from 5 - 9 PM during the summer. Tennis - tennis courts (4 clay and 15 hard) are available and the resort is known for the Acura Tennis Classic that has been held there for years (note - 2007 will be the last year so don't miss it). Shopping - yes, you can do some shopping here, whether you are a guest or just spending the day visiting. Not a mall but a few very upscale shops to suit your fancy including fashions by Lilly Pulitzer and Tommy Bahama.
Membership is a DEPOSIT, not EQUITY, and the base fee is $95,000 for the Signature Membership (financing is available for up to 3 years with 25% down) which is 90% refundable after 30 years (and it may be willed one time). Quarterly dues are $1,710 and food and beverage minimum is $440 per quarters (easy to meet - take your friends to dinner at BlueFire Grill!). Other memberships are available, including a Sport Membership - contact Arika Marotz for more details at (760) 931-7535. La Costa Villas - a number of whole-ownership condominiums (some completed with more being developed) available to purchase. Note that there are usage restrictions; theses are NOT time shares. The La Costa area of Carlsbad offers a wonderful lifestyle, with diverse housing, great views, a temperate climate year-round, easy access to the beach, AND the famous La Costa Spa and Resort. Golf - yes, you can become a member but beware...this is NOT set up like the country club you maybe familiar with (and hoping for). It IS a resort, so there are many amenities you can take advantage of, but you are sharing the overall facility with hotel guests. On the other hand fees are far less than you would pay at an exclusive country club in
