I inspected a house for a client about a year ago, now. The home was nice and no major issues. Three months later the client, a recently divorced mother, called to have me inspect another home. The financing fell through on the first deal. The 5 year old house was in decent shape with a few minor issues.A few weeks later, I get a call from the Realtor asking if I could look at the plumbing again and refer a plumber, because the contractor had been out three times to fix the leaking tub spigot ,that I had reported on,and kept charging the client for the calls. The client was stressed out to the point of tears.I arrived at the house and looked at the work and thought, boy they sure used a lot of caulk. I unscrewed the spigot and noticed that there was about a full tube of caulk that had been squirted in behind the spigot, but no teflon tape on the threads. I taped the threads and the problem was solved. I fixed a couple more of the minor issues and didn't have the heart to charge anything. I just told her if she wanted to she could mail me $20 for the gas and parts sometime, when things get better. Then I forgot all about it.
6 months later I get a thank you card with $20. She really did appreciate that little service. The Realtor had been refering me quite often. It all made me feel warm and fuzzy inside, like volunteer work does.
I guess if there is a point to this blog, it would be that sometimes the little things matter.
