What if... Facebook added blogging to its member accounts?

What if... Facebook added blogging to its member accounts?  FaceBook continues to grow at an unimaginable pace.  The last member count I've heard was they just  surpassed the 400 million users mark.  Think about that.  If each member contributed 1 penny to their favorite charity, more than $4,000,000 would be raised worldwide.  But more than the shear numbers, Facebook continues to be a socially polarizing place for people to connect with friends and businesses to connect with potential customers.

        Facebook + Blogging = $1,000,000,000

I'm not saying it will happen, but what if Facebook were to add full blown blogging capabilities that could be associated with each account?

Would you take the time to visit your friend's blogs? Or do you get enough of them from their micro-blogs already?

Would you find more people reading your blogs because it is so closely tied to your Facebook friends?

Would your blogs go more viral?

Would blogs grow your sphere of influence easier on Facebook? Quicker?

Would blogs attract even more members to Facebook?

Would blogs attract more businesses to Facebook?

Would businesses be able to attract more Facebook Fans through their blogs?

Would business quickly overwhelm their fans?

Would having more businesses on Facebook errode or increase Facebook's value to its members?

Would it be a huge potential source of new revenue for Facebook?

Would you be willing to pay for blogging capabiliies?

In my vision, it would mean the emergence of Internet 2.0.  It would quickly grow into a 1+ billion dollar a year industry.  Businesses would flock to the social media giant creating an enormous perpetual income stream.  Where's Bill Gates when I need him?  I could marry this with his foundation and create truck loads of money for some very worth wild causes.  Anyone at Facebook interested?  Bill?  Warren?  Give me a call!  I think I need some venture money!

What are your thoughts?  Do you have questions I haven't thought of?

And there are still folks dragging their feet on whether to start a Facebook page or not.  Maybe when it gets to 500,000 users will be the trigger to climb on board.

i absolute love fb and have been able to profit as well.. I think the illusion of it being social not for business will be destroyed if people where blogging anymore than they already do with status updates and notes feature.. In another words... "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT"

Hi Douglas - I see the potential for a lot of good, as long as we can effectively filter out the ton of noise that this would create. I'd also like to invest in the company that will provide Facebook all of the servers they'll need!

Andrew - I couldn't agree more.  One slight correction though it's 500,000,000!  Pretty ridiculous when when you have to put that many zeros behind a number!

John - good input.  But people are already posting links to their external blogs in your news strem. I'm not talking about adding more polution to that!  I talking about business pages communicating with it's fan base. What do you think?

Social Networking is here to stay. Those are a lot of good questions. I think a blog on Facebook could add alot of value. I think it would be a great idea.

Douglas,

Imagine if the folks at Facebook were paying attention to your blog.  That's quite in interesting idea to consider. In the final analysis, if it creates market share I am sure they have considered it.  Good post Douglas
