Gretzky - Did Being "Lazy" Made Him Great?

I am watching the US-Canadian hockey game as I am reading favorite postings on Active Rain. The US is up against the Canadians at the moment and it is really hard to type because my fingers are all crossed, hoping for continued good playing!

This hockey game is wonderful to watch, filled with quality players from the NHL playing for their native countries with more energy than you see anywhere except possibly the final game of the Stanley Cup.  As I am sitting here I remember other great hockey games and hockey players and know that their relevance is not just to the sport but to us as realtors.  Remember the Miracle Game that none of us should forget?  A young team with an eighteen year old and a nineteen year old player went up against the Soviet Army hockey team and won. As realtors we know that the seasoned older realtor can be beat by a hardworking young agent dedicated to learning his/her craft.  In sport and in life nothing is guaranteed. Your last success is your last success - that is all. No promise of future success, so you have to be working and growing all the time.

Wayne Gretzky was known as the Great One, but he was also said to be "lazy."  (That same criticism is leveled at our hometown favorite, Alex Ovechkin, now playing for his native Russia in the Olympics.) Gretzky was called lazy because he played his position, lurked in front of the net, and was there to catch the puck and score.  Sounds pretty smart to me.  The purpose for a hockey player is to score goals, which Gretzky did very well and with amazing consistency.  He wasn't busy being busy; he was busy being great and only great.  He understood what he was supposed to do to be successful, and that is what he did.

Sound familiar? As realtors, our job is to find buyers and sellers, to make listing
presentations, feed the pipeline and close deals.  Alnything that is fluff and doesn't contribute to the bottom line should be delegated.  Being busy doesn't make you a great realtor. Figuring out what you need to do to be successful and doing that - just that - is what makes you a great one. And you can be "lazy" as long as you are great.

Ah the Great One, lazy maybe I think not. He played the game with heart and soul.

Gretzky was great! If we focus on the 20% that makes our business that's not lazy, that's smart! Great post!

Good Evening Lise - Great post.  I often find myself focused on all the small details.  I need to hire someone to delegate to!
