I've Got a Winter Olympic Event for You....

Watching the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, I have much appreciation for many events, but am left scracthing my head how some events even make the cut.

Don't get me wrong.  I really enjoy skill sports like figure skating.  Just don't get why there is also ice dancing?  Is there a difference?  Seems like many of the events are lacking in originality, even athleticism.  Come on, what exactly is curling?  And what is the difference between the guys that do that and the league bowlers I see at the local lanes?  And what does shooting have to do with cross country skiing?  If it weren't an Olympic sport, would anyone care to pay to see the event otherwise?

Having been through three blizzards this winter, I am throwing this one in the suggestion box for the International Olympic Committee (or whatever they call themselves.)

SNOW SHOVELING.

Time it, and make it a heavy snow.  Atheletes must move predetermined amount of snow in fastest time with only a shovel.  Have an aspiring Olympian on your block when you are the unfortunate of one or more blizzards?  No problem.  Get the aspiring athlete down to "practice" on your driveway.

At least it's not to be confused with any other event and I know that the guy, or gal, who wins the medals deserve them.  Shoveling is HARD.  And I know everyone in Northern Virginia agrees with me.

Hey I've got a friend who is a curling fanatic.  She and her husband curl in a league and I tried to ask why chase a ball with a broom and got an earful on tatics and strategy.  Shuffleboard on ice if you ask me :-)

Chris Ann:

Living in Nancy Kerrigan territory I can attest to the fact that figure skating has more soap operas to it than most of the events.

Now, snow shoveling - that's a great idea for a winter Olympic event.  Competitive and highly useful!

Corey:  I am really just baffled by how some of these sports deserve medals.

Jackie:  No.  I have to give that my husband James.  He worked his tail off.

Janice:  It's one of the hardest things we ever have to do, isn't it?

Cindy:  Shuffleboard on ice.  Great way to describe it.

Claudette:  There is a lot of drama surrounding skating.  And the juding is so subjective.  There is no universal element like time on which to judge.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

Why don't you get a snowblower? Oh, I know it may seem extravagent to fork out 500 bucks for a piece of equipment that you may not use every year, but it sure does get the job done quickly. If I entered your event, I'd come with a snowblower, LOL.

Chris Ann ---- I am so glad that I don't know how hard snow shoveling is --hopefully the winter is almost gone.

Elizabeth:  The snow shoveling equivalent to steroids.  Disqualified!  :)  In all seriousness, we don't have one because we have nowhere to put one in the garage.  It's already packed to the gils. We've done the next best thing and become friends with the neighbor who has one.

Charles:  Sounds like we've got more coming.  Ugh!

Liz:  No quite. We've had snowstorms as late as March.  And not small storms either.
