Suzanne Small and Rosalie Giudice of the Mahwah Senior Center.

The philosophy of the senior movement is based on the premise that aging is a normal process and that human beings need peers with whom they can interact, who are available as a source of encouragement and support.  Senior adults have the right to have a voice in determining matters in which they have a vital interest.  Multipurpose Senior Centers were established to provide nutritional, health and human services to seniors in their communities.  The programs, projects, and activities are designed to help meet individual, family and community needs as well as contriubte to the welfare of Senior Center clients.  The Mahwah Senior Activity Center is the focal point of services for seniors in this town.  The Center provides services for individuals age 60 and over and their caregivers.  The Center's programs allow more clients to age in place and prevent early entry into assisted living or nursing home placement.  Additionally, the emphasis on physical activity and education helps minimize the cost of medical care or hospitalization.

The Senior Activity Center seeks to foster independence and continued growth in older adults with heavy emphasis on physical fitness.  Classroom instruction is designed to enhance and expand our seniors'  leisure time pursuits by introducing them to different hobbies and activities.  We offer educational programs and guest speakers to enhance our seniors' knowledge of current programs and legislation that affects them.  From computers to current events, older adults are constantly challenged and stimulated by the wide array of classes and programs we offer:

Bridging the Gap

Senior Centers are playing a new role in helping older Americans and their families as we move into the new millennium. Millions of older adults and their families are struggling to bridge the gaps between work and retirement, full independence and limited support, good health and chronic conditions. Senior Centers, now and in the future, are instrumental to bridging those gaps. They are part of, as well as a gateway to, the Aging Network. Senior Centers are often both first and the foremost, source of vital community based social supports that help older Americans to remain independent in their communities.

By 2010, the baby-boom generation will constitute more than two thirds of the age 50+ population. Senior Centers are called upon to offer new ways to improve health status, reduce health disparities, decrease caregiver stress, and increase the independence of older persons.

Who is eligible?

Any Mahwah resident 60 years or older, who functions independently or who has a companion accompanying them.

Why can't I just come and go as I please?
After registering for a class you are free to participate. We encourage independence, for scheduled activities. On the contrary, we are a structured program with policies and procedures to adhere to.

What would constitute an inappropriate participant?
Since this is an activity center, we are unable to accommodate anyone suffering dementia or confusion. We do not have on-site medical personnel. This is not an adult day-care center.

Is there a fee to join?
There is no membership fee to join.

Are there fees for classes/trips?
Generally there are no fees for class participation. However, some workshops may require a fee to cover instruction and material. There will be a charge for trips.
