Social Media Comments - Don't Take 'em Personal

By
Real Estate Agent with GoGladiator Media

Friday's Tiger Woods edition of coffee with Harrison sparked quite a bit of emotion over on facebook! (See the thread here) It led me to this topic of how important it is to NOT take comments, debates, and disagreements personally in the social media space. We all process information a little differently, and that is OK. We learn so much more from people we disagree with then we ever will from those we agree with. Life is too short to worry about negative comments, just keep moving forward and great relationships can happen out of disagreements!

Let it go and LOVE IT!!!!

Im going to take the low honest road here.  So people need to be told the truth.  One does not need to be cruel about it.

That is the bad thing about putting yourself out there on the internet. Life is too short to moan over comments.

Don't take it personally if I point out your grammatical error:

It's not personal, it's personally.

It makes sense not to take comments personally, but that can be easier to say than do.

Harrison,

Great point, I love the statement we learn more from the folks we disagree with.  I am so impressed with the AR community and the sharing.  I don't always agree with what they say, but am learning a ton.

Love the Coffee with Harrison video concept.

All the best, Michelle

I like spicing up Facebook every once in awhile. Once I was called a socialist by a tea bagger type. I asked him if he could define socialism and had he read anything on it. He couldn't. Facebook can be fun if you don't have a thin skin. Just remember that when people attack you personally rather than the ideas you present, that usually means they are full of Christmas Turkey and can't summon an intelligent rebuttal.

It's funny how bent out of shape people get over things that are completely irrelevant to their own lives.  I like to keep my opinions to myself, unless asked a direct question.  Cuts down on the number of people that think I am crazy!  Have a great day everyone!

Harrison... so true, I learn a lot from those that I totally disagree with... anyway, it's social media, not my personal media... nice post.

Harrison: Good point. That being said, it's easier said than done. We all have egos; that's what makes it hard. Still, it's important to remember that we all have a right to belong and we should all try and support each other. Thanks again!

Great point.  I've learned that lesson, and its pertinent, since many bloggers "put themselves out there" into the blog-o-sphere and are suprised by the number of people that find them & their thoughts.  It's always more satisfying getting positive feedback.  Blogs don't seem to be as successful when they aren't controversial.

Jeez, if we all took everything we hear or read personally, wouldn't that take away from our productivity?  Of course , there are some folks who thrive on that sort of thing.  Great topic.

I think considering the source of criticism and/or disagreements would be the first consideration.  Is the person worthy of the mental exhaustion caused by their comments?  If diagreements are done in a respectful and tactful manner, no harm done and healthy debate may be the result.

Funny but poignant, the comments go hand in hand with the 10/90 rule.  Life is ten percent what happens and ninety percent of how one reacts.

Personal Comments and Negative Comments can be two different things or they can be the same.  We need to recognize the difference.  Negative comments that are NOT personal... someone does not agree with me, OK - let's talk about it and it's a healthy discussion.  Personal comments - NO WAY.  We're not talking about it... you're deleted.

Harrison:

I had to watch the end of your video twice.   I thought you had thrown your coffee cup over your shoulder.  This is the first time I've read one of your posts or watched one of your videos.  It was entertaining!!!  I'll come back and check this out again.  Thanks.
