Everything you always wanted to know about Creative Commons licenses*

Everything you always wanted to know about  Creative Commons licenses   *but were afraid to ask was answered by Jeff Turner an ActiveRain member in a couple of ActiveRain posts from long, Fengergolds Copyshop photolong ago.

Free Photos At The Flickr Of A Mouse

For The Love Of Creative Commons

Those with the gift of photography sometimes want to share some photos and they tell you so in how they license their content.  If a photo is "All Rights Reserved"  you can not use it unless the owner grants you permission.

If a photo is "Some Rights Reserved" check it out...  can the photo be used commercially?  Can the photo be altered?  What is the owner of the photo requiring for attribution?

It is kind of like ActiveRain's Green Re-Blog symbol.  Sharing.   It is collaboration...it's a kinda social thing.  Some people are not going to get it.

Creative Commons license  - photos

You got a picture you wanna share with the world? Matt Stigliano or another blogger has some words to wrap around a photo.  The blogger searches Flickr with keywords.  The blogger finds your photo.  The blogger follows your directions in the owner's license and attributes it to you.

Lyn Sims doesn't approve of Matt Stigliano's use of the photo in his featured post about written content:  Plagiarism is not an acceptable art form.  Lyn commented about the image in the post.  Don't let that confuse you...  Or I believe Lyn is saying Matt should not be using the photo he used.  Lyn said:

"I personally wouldn't take others photos like you do and add credit.  I don't think that is right either but people do it.  You can get pics for free everywhere to make your post interesting."

Whether or NOT it is OK with Lyn Sims for Matt to  "take" or  use the photo is not one of the choices the consenting adults involved need to make when they decide that collaborating is good for them.  Matt searches for a photo and says he want to use it commercially.

Jakob Fenger's (fengergold on Flickr) photo comes up.

No place to check whether Lyn Sims or anyone else is OK with Matt using it.   Or if Lyn has a say in whether Jakob should share his photo.

Search for photos with a Creative Commons license:

Flickr search screen

It's between Jakob and Matt.   Consenting adults!

Jakob the photographer shared the property with a Creative Commons license to facilitate more people seeing his photo.  Matt and Jeff are good to go....  No need to check whether it is OK with Lyn or anyone else!

Everything you always wanted to know about  Creative Commons licenses *but were afraid to ask is on the Creative Commons site. There's a link to the Creative Commons license in Jeff's first post (above.)  Jeff Turner's tutorials tell you in great detail about using Flickr photos licensed with a Creative Commons license to adorn your posts.   How to search.  Jeff's post is HOW I learned to use a photo with Creative Commons license.  Thanks Jeff!

Everything the owner of the image wants you to know... is there in the license for the photo.

Personally I like to show the license when possible... not all Flickr photos have the html to do so... but many do.  First link below is is to the Flickr members photostream (not the actual photo) second is to the license for the actual photo.  I think it may help the fussbudgets assure themself I am not "taking"  the image.

Image credit :  I "took" the e same photo Matt did by fengergold.... because I can.  Because it is licensed for me to use.   I thank fengergold (Jakob Fenger)  for sharing. http://www.flickr.com/photos/42934556@N00/ / CC BY 2.0  apologies to Lyn if I misinterpreted her comment on Matt's post.

I have looked over the creative commons photos but have yet to use them but I know I have an option which is nice.

Sounds like Lyn spoke before knowing anything about the legality or even common, accepted practices involved. Way to go uninformed opinion! And here I was beginning to miss ActiveRain.

Thanks for the comments.  Bookmark Jeff's posts.  True tutorials about where to get photos AND collaborate with others!

Ian "collaboration" is a hard concept for some of us. With all the AR  posts about stolen content both pictures and  words, it is easy for members here to take the attitude they are safer to just take their own photos.  Safe is not always as interesting but if it works for them, more power to 'em.  It bothers me when they brag over and over about it or make remarks that someone else is "taking" content.  Especially  if their content is mediocre...  but it is their blog.

If Lyn's comment is that Matt is doing wrong, I think she is off base.  Clicking on the link in Mat's photo I think takes you to the photo, link there to the license.   Matt addressed in the comments the license the photo has.

There are members on ActiveRain opposed to Re-Blog...  they just don't gotta do it.

Maureen - you are right safe is not always as interesting but in this fast paced world we live in today some prefer safe to being sorry.

I haven't used them yet. Years ago, before blogging, we bought a website which came with a cool header image. I loved it and we started to put content on the website when low and behold...we got a nasty letter. Even thought we bought and paid for it...apparently the company we bought from did not have the rights to use the image. It was a nightmare! So since then I've only used my own photos.

I am sure I will get a lot of "better safe than sorry"  comments like Kathy's  and examples like Monika's but I hope some will read Jeff Turners post and get something out of it.

Jeff was not encouraging UNSAFE behavior in 2007  and neither am I by encouraging reading his posts.

It is like rights to anything else.  Would you rule out  buying fruit at any road side stand if you found out later that the vendor was not the rightful owner of the apples he sold you?

Did you go after the person who sold you stolen content Monika?

Properly used, Creative Commons for commercial use via Flickr is a great resource. Like anything else, it can be abused. I personally share ALL of my public photos under a full Creative Commons, share and share alike CC license. Some write for permission, though they are NOT required to do so. I've already given the license. As a result, my photos have appeared in literally thousands and thousands of blog posts and even in print magazines, music videos and on major news sites.

That is why CC was created. I do it to give back to the open source community. I wish more people did and I wish more people would understand it.

That said, I've stopped trying to explain it. It aint that hard to understand.

I miss 2007...  I miss people teaching about the possibilities of social media rather than "better safe" than sorry...

Thanks Jeff

Maureen, Thank you for the information.  I use mostly my own photos but it's useful to know this and being VERY careful with someone else's work.  I've got it bookmarked to study.

thanks to Mike Jaquish for Re-Blogging this and for featuring it in his new group which confuses me.

Really YOU people who say "I use all my own photos"  are missing so much and I blame you for prophets like Jeff Turner bailing on ActiveRain.

Who cares that you are using your own photos?  Are you looking for accolades?  You miss the social part of social media.  That social does not mean party it means that you are not alone,  Social media is about collaboration,  co-creation.

If you are Gods gift to photography knock yourself out`

I feel sorry for the newer members who have less access to Jeff because his wisdom is no longer featured on the ActiveRain dashboard.  He posted a lot for those too lazy or stupid to get outside ActiveRain to learn about social media.

Instead new AR members  have a dashboard that says

"better safe than sorry"

"real estate agents should not play Farmville"

"I take all my own photos because you can never be sure..."

and the ever popular "don't copy and paste"which gets featured and needs to be featured because the new members see the old members plagiarizing.

and ActiveRain gets more and more mediocre despite the best efforts of Jonathan, Bob Stewar, etc. because people like Jeff Turner move on and seldom come back to ActiveRain... so we recycle the same crap over and over...but yours has your lovely safe photos on itt!!!

RE instructors who don't understand co-creation are doing our industry a disservice,  It's not a big secret.  And those same RE instructors were teaching people about websites 10 to 15 years ago and they were teaching how to cut and paste.  No mention of copyright then.
