Is Your Pie Hole Keeping You From Landing The Job?

By
Home Stager

While on styling and redesign jobs I’ve found it’s best to first keep my pie hole shut and let the client lady not speakingdescribe what they want from me. It can be hard trying to keep my personal style preferences from spewing out of my mouth. What, what, what you say??? Isn’t that what I’m supposed to be doing, telling the client what styling selections they need to make their home oh so fabulous?

Let me explain, this post is about the client's preferences for a certain style and me helping them achieve this look for dwelling not staging to sell. Yes, you still have to ask all the pertinent questions before going to the job. When a client calls for advice on how to help them style their home it’s up to me to take their vague idea of what style they have in mind and then I explain how I can help them.

When I get to the home they’ll still have lot of questions about the process and that’s no problem. I go around the home and ask what they like or may not like about certain pieces that they already own. It helps us determine what style they feel drawn to.

The past few jobs frankly had me scratching my head. My clients have told me previous people they've hired counseled them to get rid of what they already owed and loved and were advised go down the stylist’s chosen route. Kind of impersonal and can you say a cha-ching route to boot?

Let’s just say that route led to a dead end for the previous stylist.

Sure the client may not have all the pieces they need to complete the look they are trying to achieve, but we work around what they have and make notes for the future purchases.

The Pottery Barn look is still popular and trying to make that happen with 3 red monkeys, a bowl of left over pebbles and shells from a cherished family holiday, mismatched furniture, a series of collectible lighthouses isn’t going to be easy. But it can be done using my crafty ideas and a list of suggested future purchases will complete the look!

So by remembering to shut your pie hole first and listening about their preferred style you’ll  help them achieve that look they long for. Hey it’s all about them!

Sharon, you're right I like when you stated we are the creative guides to get them there! It's about what they want.

Jane, you bet staging or redesigning to live is a whole other bird ;) As for staging well then all bets are off and the stuff advice is spewing out of my mouth!

John I can't help it, it's the kid in me who still uses these phrases. Heck I still watch 'The Three Stooges', go figure.

Lora, It's hard but I'm still working on it and I suspect this advice is adaptable in many professions!

Cheryl, I know what you mean about dead air, it's like a lead balloon but I've tried to make a game out of it by keeping my pie hole shut :) That could be treading on dangerous water working for relatives but it can be done and it seems you came out of it a winner!

Cynthia - so true.  Amazing how much easier our jobs are when we listen first.

I agree unless you are in a vacant home, most homes have somewhere a stager can start and that makes the client feel better that their home isn't being turned upside down and they are being told they have horrible taste.

Often times, as you stated (& I recently blogged about) "Designers" think their way is the best way.  But as you so eloquently stated: shutting your proverbial Pie-Hole & listening to how the client want to live in their own home will get you further down the road

April, you got that right listen first...open pie hole later :)

Peggy, I'm still fightin' the urge too!

Todd, Yes I agree, vacant homes are a whole different game. With redesign one has to respect the client's taste and budget and work accordingly. I can see the trepidation in their faces when I first arrive and work hard to put them at ease and assure them it's going to be fun.

Connie, I read & saw the great results in your blog. You did a great job of styling the client's rooms after the Designer's unprofessional & abrupt departure. I'm surprised your client was able to trust someone again, thanks to you she can.

Mary, this client didn't have much to work with but I did my best with what was there and left him a list, he did a great job of putting together! Thanks for coming back, always nice to see your beautiful smile on my blog :)

Cynthia- I've always said you can't help someone until you know what it is they want.  You can only do that by listening with your ears and head and NOT your "pie hole".  Loved this post.

Hi Cynthia, It is so important to keep your mouth shut, and listen first.  We have two ears so we can listen twice as much as we talk.

Oohh how I've missed your smiling face and gorgeous photos Gail! Yes I'm doing well and hope you are doing the same! Yeah...Pie Hole I think I showed my age with that phrase, oh well :o)

I've been sitting at my desk the past few mornings trying to catch some cardinals sitting on my door wreath, then they hop to the transom window and peek in at me. I'm not fast enough to catch them :( I'm not givivng up!

Gail she was teasing me before I left for the day...she peeked at me from the transom. I had my camera ready to snap but she was way too fast for me. Yes flitty was the perfect word. I think it's cute they sit on ledge and peek in ;)

Well add 22 years to that you'd be spot on!
