February 23, 2010 - Today is the 16th Annual SPAY DAY

The Humane Society of the US with the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, is proud to celebrate the 16th Annual Spay Day.

Did you know that between 3 million and 4 million cats, dogs, kittens and puppies are put down in the US each year?

Spay Day is an annual event designed to bring awareness across the country, of the importance of saving animal lives by spaying or neutering, which will reduce the number of homeless pets who must be euthanized.

Hundreds of events are scheduled to take place this month.  For more information in your area, please visit humanesociety.org/spayday.

Please support your local Humane Society.

Hi Toula - Good reminder for all. The kindest thing we can do for our pets is to spay and neuter them.  It saves them a lot of stress and prevents the proliferation of unwanted kittens and pups.

Toula - You are so right!  Spaying or neutering you kitties is such a good idea.  Not only does it reduce the number of strays in population, but can help them live longer.  I read somewhere once that one cat and her offspring can produce several thousand cats in just 7 years.

Toula, This is so important. During the blizzard, I couldn't help but to think of not only the homeless but also the homeless animals. I've volunteered for an animal rescue and know the good work that is done. The trap and release efforts to decrease the feral cat population is something most people don't know about. Great post!

Great job bringing Spay Day to the forefront Toula. 3-4 million is way too big a number of puppies and kittens to be put down each year.

My Wife and I were talking about this last night. In Big Canoe we have a doggie park as well as a humane shelter. Folks dump their poor bewildered animal on the road s near us. It is a real shame and they all should be spayed or neutered. Good post Toula
