I got curious about comments I heard lately about Canada’s failure to “own the podium” so I did my own investigation. What was my methodology? Pardon me. How do I do dat?
I dusted off my university statistics courses …. Not true … I let Excel do all the work.
I think the idea that Canada with its meager population is going to knock off the US is ludicrous. It’s great PR but if those folks really believe their own propaganda we better check the Kool Aid.
So. I calculated the ratio of medals won per 100,000 populations.
Countries like Norway, Austria, Switzerland, and Sweden are amazing but what else would we expect from countries where skates and skis are issued while still in the womb.
Canada at one medal per three million people is far superior to the US ratio of one medal to twelve million people.

I do think we were a little uncharacteristically brash about this program though. We'll be fortunate to come away with the same number of medals than we garnered four years ago. We had a lot of fourth and fifth place finishes.
