I Have Too Much Money Left at the End of the Month - Oh, I Hate That!

I Have too much Money Left at the End of the Month by Sandy ShoresNot something you typically hear, is it?  You don't hear people complaining that they have too much money left after they've paid all of their other bills,  Many don't even have enough to cover their monthly bills, today.

It's so important to watch those pennies.

The other day I was at a convenience store purchasing gas.  My purchase was $44.96.  I gave the cashier $45.00.  I waited.  She chuckled as she was handing me my change, almost as if she were uncomfortable handing me a bunch of pennies. "I have to give you your change."  "That's fine, I like getting my change back.  All those pennies add up."  She proceeded to tell me a story of a clerk that worked in the store for over 5 years.  She said that so often customers never took the time to get, nor wanted their change back from their purchase.  So, he would keep their change.  Over a 5 1/2 year period of time he collected nearly $30,000 in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, of other people's money!

It really does add up.

When I was little my parents taught me to pay myself first.  You pay your your electric bill, water bill, telephone bill, etc. You've got to be sure that you're on that list too,  Everytime I got birthday money or Christmas money, I had to save at least 25% of it, so I could pay myself. As an adult the amount that I've paid myself has varied. My teenagers have learned that anytime they get money they need to save at least 50% of it. They better do that now, because I know that when they get out on their own they'll be lucky to save anything at all, in the beginning.

Times are tough for so many people today. If you can't pay yourself, look at the ways that you are wasting money.  If you're spending $3 for that gourmet cup of coffee, on your way to work each day that can add up fast. You could be spending $780 a year.  WOW!

For 8 years I had a tenant that used to sign the back of his paycheck and hand it to me each month.  The check was always several dollars more than the rent.  "Hold on, let me get you change.  I owe you money back on this." "Forget it, don't worry about it," he'd say. "Well, I'll apply it to next month's rent."  "No, it's only a couple of bucks. I don't care."  And, often he would complain about not having any money. Every month he tossed away $3 to $5 on rent. At the end of 8 years it amounted to over $450.

If you're not in a position to save any money, look at the ways that you can stretch your dollar farther.  It's amazing to find the places where we throw our money away.

Is that like having parts left over when you build something with plans? Someday I can build something with all the spare, left over parts. I save them cuz my wife accuses me of leaving them out. I would consider the extra money as a tip BTW...
I just love Wednesdays, don't you?

Hi Sandy, For so many people, the money is gone long before the month is out!  This is good advice to always pay yourself.  Those nickels and dimes add up!

There actually is a gazette called Penny Pincher Gazette--I'm not sure if it is online or not.

Young people often do not pick up pennies or dimes from the street or sidewalk but they will pick up dollars.

Sandy, it is never too late to pinch pennies. I love to save them and watch how much I have when I take them to get changed! Teaching children the value of saving in invaluable for them later!!

Sandy - I think many of us who have been in real estate any period of years, have seen cycles where money was left over at the end of the month, and some where there may not have been enough.  I never take the good times for granted.  I also recycle my cans and bottles each year just prior to Thanksgiving.  I have been amazed at the amounts of redemption.

Paul, You're cracking me up!  I know exactly what you mean - there always are leftover parts.  Now, it's really bad when there are leftover nuts and bolts when you're finished putting an engine back together. (I remember my Dad working in the garage when I was a kid.)

Mary, I know, it is sad. But, for many, we see where money is just slipping through their fingers.

Monika, Thanks for the info. I just went online and signed up for free emails from the Penny Pincher Gazette. I always stop and bend over to pick up pennies.

Caren, You're right, it's never too late to learn to pinch pennies.

Myrl, You're absolutely right.  In the real estate world, some months there's money left at the end of the month, and other months were just not that fortunate.  Good for you, for recycling - that's great!

Sandy, I couldn't agree with you more.  I pay the bills first and the rest is "play" money or saving for a big ticket item that I really want.

My husband tends to just leave his change laying around everywhere.  A couple of years ago, I started parting all that change in a jar on the kitchen counter.  Occasionally, our church asks for help raising funds for different things.  Guess where we go firstl  Yep, our jar of change.  It's amazing how quickly it adds up.

Great post Sandy.  All those pennies do add up.  I used to chuckle about my wife using coupons at the grocery store, until I went with her a few times and so how much she was able to save by using them.

Sandy, you are so correct.  Some folks, who should know better, have such a cavalier attitude about their finances when they really should be watching their pennies.

Lou, Pennies do turn into dollars.  I remember as a kid my sister and I used to throw pennies at our other sister, because she would run all over the house to chase them so she could save them.  We guess who is laughing all the way to the bank today?

Hey TOTO, I have always stopped to pick up pennies on the street for as long as I can remember.  I heard that Pennsylvania has had over 73 inches of snow this year already and another storm was headed their direction.  I'm packing my bags now. I'll be on the next flight out (as soon as the snow storms subside),

Carole, So important, we have to consider ourselves...how will we live in the future.  Will Social Security be around then.  Highly unlikely.

Ann, I was amazed when this clerk told me that the other store employee had saved so much money over the years. Goes to show how much people just throw away.

Irene, Wow, what a great idea!  A jar of your husbands loose change that you take to your church!  I LOVE IT!

Gary, Those coupons do add up. I don't use them as much as I should. But I'd like to get back to it again, because I know I used to save so much.

Gabe, I've met people that act like money grows on trees.  Well, I want one of those!

Sandy this is a good message no matter what age the reader is.  I bought one of those plastic jars that has a lid that counts the change as it goes in.  A simple thing.  I throw every coin I find in it just to see how fast it grows!  It's fun saving!
