Money magazine ranks Milton as 7th 'best place to live' in US

Milton is a great place to live. Just ask Money. The magazine, in its August issue, ranked the community seventh in its annual ranking of the country's most livable towns, called "America's Best Places to Live."

The only other New England community in the top 10 was Hanover, N.H., which finished second. The top-ranked community was Middleton, Wis.

The magazine was extravagant in its praise: "Just 8 miles south of the heart of Boston, Milton borders the Blue Hills Reservation, a 7,000-acre park with hiking, swimming, and skiing. Proximity to the city is what brings -- and keeps -- Milton residents where they are. Its loyal citizens do age, but even then, they don't move."

The magazine noted the town's diverse population, the recent construction work done for its school system, and the ongoing expansion of the library.

Milton residents were surprised that the town was publicly recognized, but agreed it is a wonderful place to live.

"The location is excellent and it's a great place to raise children," said Walter Heller, director of the Department of Public Works. "It's a great community."

In its listing, Money gave extra consideration this year to home prices and property taxes, an acknowledgement of "what's on readers' minds right now."

The magazine listed the community's median home price as $527,670 in 2006, with average property taxes of $3,824. Other factors it considered were economic vitality, job availability, safety, ethnic and racial diversity, cultural amenities, and green space.

There were some negatives -- traffic and little commercial activity. "What's missing, most agree, is a destination eatery," the magazine noted.

Milton residents seconded the praise for their town.

"I like the suburban ambience and the proximity to the city, especially when I was working," said Charles C. Winchester, 71, who is retired and has lived in Milton since 1965.

Said Marion V. McEttrick, chairwoman of the Board of Selectmen : "It's a neighborhood-based way of life. There are neighborhood schools. There's a close-knit community in each neighborhood."

Paula Rizzi, a lifetime resident who wants to downsize now that her children have grown, said she has been looking at homes in other communities, but always comes back to Milton.

"It's such a nice town," she said. Unlike other suburban towns, where parents can feel like taxi drivers as they ferry children from one event to the other, main activities are close by, she said.

"My kids could walk to school, the park, the church, the library."
