On October 10, 2009 thousands of people flocked to Missouri as Chesterfield Arts publically unveiled The Awakening. This 5 part, 17 ft. tall, cast-aluminum sculpture weighs more than 2 tons and was created by sculptor John Seward Johnson Jr. Johnson's largest and most dramatic work, this statue depicts a giant struggling to arise from the earth. A hand and foot are partially above ground while the right arm juts 17 feet into the air. The giant's mouth is wide open as if he is waking up and struggling to be free from the ground. John himself attended the unveiling, as did Chesterfield Mayor John Nations. People of all ages from around the community followed a musical parade to the site of great sculpture. What an event!
