I never gave much thought to Mission Statements, let alone to composing one, until I was in my doctor's office recently and noticed that he had his Mission Statement prominently displayed in the waiting room as well as in his examining rooms. Out of curiosity, I read it and was impressed with the amount of thought and feeling that had obviously gone into preparing it. I decided to see what I could come up with in the way of a Mission Statement for Mike Kelly Realty.
The first things I thought should be addressed were the company's goals. To be a successful real estate broker - yes, obviously. To make money at what I was doing - another no-brainer. But there were also other issues that were important to me - for example, providing the highest quality service I could to Mike Kelly Realty's clients and customers. This meant working with clients or customers until their needs were met, no matter how long it took - or how frustrating trying to please them became. Another goal would be to support the community that supported me by joining volunteer groups and service organizations and participating in government activity at the local level - e.g. by serving on the Board of Education or other Boards where I felt I could make a contribution. Another goal was to foster a spirit of teamwork among our agents in a profession which can be very competitive.
Once I had outlined my goals for Mike Kelly Realty, I had to define how I was going to achieve these goals. Providing the highest quality service meant maintaining our integrity and communicating with our clients and customers on a regular basis. To accomplish this, we are always straightforward about what is happening in the market and we encourage our sellers to take a realistic approach when it comes to pricing their properties. We also periodically send out letters describing our actions in trying to sell their properties and enclose copies of newspaper ads, magazine ads and the names of websites where their properties are posted.
Our agents are encouraged to join volunteer organizations and to participate in community activities. We have frequent staff meetings where ideas are exchanged and agents offer to help one another with the listing and selling of properties. All in all, I feel that the sense of camaraderie and of teamwork that has developed has greatly benefited Mike Kelly Realty.
The greatest surprise to me in developing a Mission Statement was that I had to look into myself to define what my goals really were. This in itself was a significant step toward making Mike Kelly Realty into the company I want it to be.
