During the last few weeks I have been really busy. Mostly with Prescott area REO buyers looking for great deals. This one lady I have been working with has given me reason to examine my motivation for doing what I do.
We spent weeks looking for a home for her that would fit her very modest budget. The home also had to fit her very specific financing ability. We finally identified a home that was in much need of cleaning. Not the kind of cleaning you do with a mop and a broom, but rather the kind you do with explosives, dangerous chemicals and high pressure and temperature water while wearing a special suit with a helmet and air tanks.
Anyway this was the home she wanted to buy and we outbid another buyer and went into escrow. The financing she wanted to use was USDA (nearly 100% financing). They are picky about the condition of the homes they lend on. So picky in fact that she was not able to purchase this home with that loan.
When we finally had the discussion where we I told her we had better move on to another home and another type of financing, she asked me it I was going to give up on her. "No" I told her, "I'm going to keep working with you until you move into the house you are dreaming of". She told me that she understood that other Realtors didn't want to work with her because her goal was difficult to achieve and it also didn't pay well. I told her it wasn't for the money, but rather the satisfaction I feel when we reach that goal together and I hand you the key to your new home.
Right about that time I noticed that she was crying. What I had said had really moved her. And it was at that moment that I realized a big part of the reason I love being a Realtor. There are few professions where at the end of the day we can hope to feel that level of satisfaction that exists when we lead our client down the path and through the doorway of their dream home.
I'm still working with that lady and we have yet to find the perfect home for her. But that relationship has already paid me more than any commission I am likely to receive. And I am grateful to be in a position to help this woman with her dreams.
