Tax Information For Greene County At Lake Oconee

We are now into 2010. This means that some of you, particularly those who just turned age 65, may need to be aware of some tax related deadlines. For your convenience, here are the deadlines.
1. Homestead Exemption Application---Deadline April 1, 2010
2.  Homestead Freeze Application----Deadline April 1, 2010
3.  $8,000 School and County Tax Exemption ----April 1, 2010 (You must be age 65 or older on January 1, 2010 of the year for which application is made.) You must show proof of age.
4. Taxpayer's Return of Real Property Form PT-50R April 1, 2010

You can download the first three forms by going to the web site:
www.greenecountyga.gov/ <http://www.greenecountyga.gov/>       Click on Departments---àTax Assessor and the downloadable forms are at the bottom of the page.  For the Form PT-50 R the office prefers that you either come by the office so they can print one out for you with all of the current assessments and information on it, OR, you can call them and give them you name and address and they will print it out and mail it to you for your completion.
 
The Taxpayer's Return of Real Property Form PT-50R above is probably the only one we need to discuss. Basically, filing this form tells the Tax Assessor that you do not agree with the assessed value placed on your home and/or your land in 2009.  If you do NOT file this form before the deadline, you are presumed to agree with the assessed value on your home and land in 2009.  If you file this form, it will generate a new assessment by the appraiser of your property.  After his new appraisal is completed you will be notified.   If you still disagree with his assessed value, then you can appeal his decision to the Board of Equalization.   This is a 3-member board comprised of local taxpayers and they will hear your argument together with the Tax Appraiser's argument and make their decision on your assessed value.    
 
If you get a form from the Tax Assessor's office already filled out with all of the information, all you have to do is fill in two spaces.  Under the "Current YearTaxpayer100% Stated Fair Market Value" column, put in what you think is the fair value for the land and then the improvement.  Sign and date the form and mail it in to them.  That's all there is to it.  Good Luck.
