The Value of Asking for What You Want!

A few months ago I picked up a book that extolled the value of asking for what you want.  It seems like such an easy concept.  However, how often do we think we deserve something but never bother to ask for it because it might seem rude or forward or presumptuous?  I hate to say it but it happens to me more than it should.

Bolstered by this crazy idea I decided to try it out.  A while back I had an opportunity to work with a buyer who really wanted to work with me but didn't want to miss out on his USAA benefit by using one of their recommended agents.  I don't make this a habit but I had gotten pretty friendly with the family and wanted to see them through their next purchase so I offered to match the discount (which amounted to about $700 dollars.)

After lots of looking and a failed contract the buyers decided to put a bid in for a HUD home.  We won the bid and over the next 45 days faced hurdle after hurdle.  I got them over each one and a few days prior to closing we all felt good that we were going to get the close accomplished.

The buyer was well aware that I went above and beyond the call of duty on this one.  He and his family were grateful for not only my technical expertise but also the emotional support I was able to provide due to some special circumstances.  I knew that I earned every penny of that commission.

So, I took a deep breath and I asked for it!  And you do you know what happened?  My buyer agreed that I earned it and he wanted me to keep it.  He was more than happy to waive the rebate I had offered.

Since then the thrill of my success has faded a bit.  However, a few days ago I was reminded of it.  I was meeting with one of my favorite escrow agents.  After some talk she asked me for my business in a different market.  It never occurred to use her because for transactions because it was in a different town from where she was located.  However, her company has a branch in the other town and I'm not as concerned about seeing her on closing day as I am about her getting us to the closing table smoothly.  So, the next chance I get, I'm going to give her the opportunity.  If she had not asked I would have never thought about it.

Next time you think you deserve something just ask for it!  You may be surprised at how easy it is to get what you want.

Good for you Angie.... You should be proud that you went above and beyond and it will come back to you 1000 fold. Doing nice things always gets rewarded at some point. Nice story.

Angie:

Since it was a HUD home, I know you more than earned it. Good work!
