Can you really understand what Men's Hockey Gold means to a Canadian?

The short answer is no, if you are not Canadian you can not possibly understand the cultural, political and sociological implication of what Olympic Gold in Hockey means to a Canuck.  I have heard many suggest the average Canadian would gladly have traded all the 13 other Gold Medals Canada earned just to get that one.Vancouver 2010 Gold Medal  Don't get me wrong, we are very proud that our sparesley populated nation of 35 million  set a Winter Games record of 14 Gold but... hell we're talking about hockey eh!

The closest thing for an American might be if the World Series was truly a World Series and it was all on the line against Japan, but this is not even close.  I know Americans that don't give a whit about Baseball and some that don't give a darn about Football.  I don't know ANYONE that missed the Gold Medal game on Sunday or didn't find a way to watch it later or pay attention to it somehow, even those in Khandahar Afghanistan.  If the Taliban had come after them buggers on Sunday they were TV watching sitting ducks (except when a goal was scored).

The goal that Sydney (Syd the Kid) Crosby scored in Overtime is now forever immortalized in the history of our nation, stamps, coins, books and movies will be made.   This goal will be discussed and heralded 40 years from today much like the famous Canada cup goal scored by Paul Henderson in 1972 against the CCCP.  Every Canadian alive will remember where they were that moment the goal was scored.

When Team USA tied up the game in the dieing seconds of the 3rd period there was a huge disturbance in The Force, like millions of voices crying out, then silence. Hearts sinking, falling through the floor.  Brutal end to a 14 day crazy party.

Redemption at 7:40 of Overtime, Crosby snaps one in on the short side after a nifty cycling of the puck.  Tragedy to triumph, beers in the air...jugs of beer in the air!  This is what we have been waiting 8 years for!

Canada is Hockey

Scott,

There are a lot of lessons for everyone about "success" when you look back at this game. Yes, I think this goal will be as important as Paul Henderson's goal.

It is of course better to simply win than have to explain.

Scott - it was a well played game with some nail biting moments but if My dad were still alive he would be up in the air for at least another week.
