Charity Spotlight: Big Brothers Big Sisters

By
Real Estate Agent with Edwards Real Estate Group, Inc.

Big Brothers was started in Seattle in 1957, and Big Sisters was started in 1973. In 1999, the two agencies merged. The branch that serves King, Pierce and Jefferson counties is based in Seattle.

Mission: The agency matches and provides support for adult volunteers and children to build one-on-one mentoring relationships.

Programs: The community-based program, one of the best-known Big Brothers Big Sisters programs, brings mentors and children ages 7 to 16 together two to four times a month for activities and outings. A school-based program targets the academic and social skills of children by bringing mentors and children 7 to 16 together for one hour a week on elementary, junior-high and high-school campuses. A separate program serves children 4 to 16 who have incarcerated parents. Big Brothers Big Sisters works with local jails and prisons to find family-friendly activities that include the child, the incarcerated parent and mentors.

Requirements: All volunteers must commit to at least one year as a mentor and must pass an extensive screening process, which requires three references, an in-person interview and a background check.
